Those sensors don't do much. I've always tried to stop on them with virtually no success at making the light turn green faster.

If I see the sensor in the left turn lane, I usually stop on it which triggers a left turn advance. This works most of the time (it works 100% of the time at certain intersections around my area). I don't think it works 100% of the time because the traffic light computer overrides the sensor readings perhaps under certain conditions (ie. time of day).

appently, if you flash you highbeam really fast, numerous times, the light will turn green too. because apparently this is how police get thru intersections.
also, i find if you stop far enough back in a left hand turning lane, you get the advance green, only because the lights tihnk there is numerous cars there.

I've heard that before but I personally think it's a myth.

Hmmm...maybe the flashing lights and the loud noise helps with that.

actually the flashing lights might (but not necessarily will) work only on those lights that have the infra-red sensors installed (it's a little box that is usually installed on the 'arm' of the light). They have been completely removed in the metro toronto, but there's quite a few in york and peel regions.
normally they are set to react to the infrared signal that can be sent through a special device installed in the lights of police/ambulance/fire cars. essentially it is just a strobe light that works on infrared frequency. I actually know someone who made one unit himself and it does work.

haha... ya
but i guess its for if their stuck at a red light, ie, lots of traffic, and no way to make a left hand turn.
i just heard this from my friend a while back, but he also thought he knew everything....

Flashing your lights doesnt work. Some (not all) lights are equipped with sensors anyways. Also, its not a unit in the light at all, it a seperate box (module) that is hooked up in the car. A buddy of mine bought one from a relative who is a cop.... very very illegal to have!
If you come up to a light, and it has the sensor, you hit the switch, and BAM, Green Light :) Very dangerous thought, as if your not careful you can cause an accident pretty quickly. He sold it off though.

I'm pretty sure there are some sensor on the ground. I can see the line there... plus it's always work in my intersection :)

During highschool, grade 8 even, I went to an ontario traffic center designed to teach students etc.
It showed an actual inductive loop and how when the person put even a license plate on the censor, it tripped the switch for a light bulb. It was VERY sensitive. However I can see some vehicles having problems. The magnet would work if your vehicle doesn't seem to trigger the traffic light properly.
It will NOT make the light change any faster than a big car that's noticed right away.
A lot of those sensors are affected by traffic-light computers and time of day is one factor that will affect whether or not you will get an advanced green.

hmm, all this time i used to flicker my headlights too thinking that it's making a difference...yikes! thanks for the info! now I guess I'll just save the hassle of light flickering and sit thru the traffic light

Do you ever get flashed back by cars on the opposite side or you do this only when you are alone at intersection? That would kinda annoy me if someone kept flashing their lights across from me.
