Hey all,
Well it all started on Friday driving home, I started to notice every time I go from 2nd to 3rd, I feel a grind and hear a grinding sound. It might happen only above 3000 rpm but it happens almost every time and it's not good. Any ideas or should I just take it in?
lol I bought an import so I wouldn't have issues, 5 months in and already transmission problems :( Should have bought a domestic :chuckle

a) Check transmission oil level
b) take it to the dealer
its under warranty, never can be to carefull....better to catch the problem now before a castrophic failure happens (speaking from experience of seeing a large excavator need every line cleaned, every componete cleaned, changed or replaced becasue they ran the hydraulic pump dry of oil)

that happened to my old mazda 3 three times in less than a year of owning it... each time i took it to the dealer and they repaired it under warranty

i have the same problem and the dealer is blaming it on my short shifter which they did not know was an oem mazdaspeed shifter lol so i am going to take it back in next week and see if they are nicer this time an let me get it repaired. Mine happens intermittantly though not all the time

That's stupid. How can the shifter cause the gear to grind? Why not swap back in the OEM one and go back?

Yeah I will take it in. Since it's under warranty, I don't have to pay a thing correct?

definetly get it in to get looked at, you had to just leave it and drop the tranny or somthing.

Did they tell you what was causing it by chance?

Not stupid. If the shifter isn't installed correctly and doesn't fully engage the gear, you can get grinding.
I don't know how the Mazda3 shifters work, but with my Sunfire there's two cables attached to it. If the cables aren't adjusted properly, you could get grinding or it could pop out of gear as the gear wouldn't be fully engaged.
As an example... go drive your car. When you'd normally shift to 3rd, put the clutch fully in and then slowly push the gear shift toward 3rd but not all the way in. It will grind as the synchros make contact but can't fully engage.
I'm not suggesting this is the problem. Just pointing out that looking to the shifter as a cause for grinding is not a bad first action.

Installing a shifter is idiot-proof on this car. McGuyver is certainly no stranger to mechanics. And the shifter shouldn't be flawed because its a one-piece design made by Mazda. The cables do not need to be adjusted.

I have the same problem if I go into reverse without ensuring the car is at a complete stop. Double clutching has solved this issue. Changing to red line manual tranny oil this week and hopefully it will smooth out 1st to 2nd gears.

Does the Mazda3 have a synchronized reverse?

In response to both of your posts, see my really old thread on the other board here:

No synchros on this tranny in reverse.

Actually this is my first manual without synchros. My Cavalier Z24 had synchros in reverse and this wasn't an issue. I just have to get used to waiting until the car is stopped before shifting into reverse now.
heh. I'm not even sure what to say to that... :chuckle

Heh... I thought it would be simpler to post like my previous car was a manual. Heck the thing is gone, who knew? LOL
I got the answer I was looking for. Heh...

Well, it looks like I have this exact same problem, i.e. grinding into 3rd, popping out of 3rd, etc. It's been getting progressively worse lately. Before, it would only happen once in awhile - now it happens around 80% of shifts, even when I try really heard to shift slow and match the revs. Is it just me, or is this gearbox made of glass??? It looksl ike other people have been having this problem on other forums as well!

bring it into the dealership...if it is under 80,000km they will repair it with no questions...they did it to my old 2005 mazda gt.
Which mazda dealer do you go to?

That's good to hear! Hopefully they don't give me any problems. I have 63k on the dial, but have extended warranty to 100k and 4 yrs.

I bought the car from Avante Mazda, Richmond Hill. I have a good relationship with them. However, I usually go to Gyro Mazda on Laird since it's close to my work. I live d/t Toronto, so it's tough for me to get time to go up to Avante for service. However, I think I will have to take it up there to get the best service
