Garmin has come out with a new black-box GPS unit, an update to the GVN-52 that at least a couple people here are using.

The GVN-53 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=10573) now has RGB output for a better signal (though people that have them are already happy with the composite output from the 52).

Of course, at nearly $500, I can't help but wonder whether I'm better off with this or by building my own car-puter.

Curiously, it says you need an adapter for RGB output but I don't see any mention of a part number or price for this adapter...

i think after you factor in the time with a carputer.. anything on the market is relatively cheaper.

on the side.. i got the GVN-52 before on my kenwood deck, beautiful navigation system.

If you got the new alpine double-din you can just buy the blackbird, and it fits into the deck (inside the deck through a slot).

The time? You mean to set it up? That wouldn't be an issue for me. :)

I'm planning on getting the dash-top OEM-style screen with the GVN-53. I think this is going to be the best solution for me in the end.

How did you find the remote to use for putting in destinations and what not? Does it use predictive text like a cell phone?
