Seems like my brake rotors rusted and are now damaged... Given I know that the mazda3 rotors regularly rust up too, but mine have now more than just rusted with a top layer, and the mechanic has brought this up and recommended that I may have to replace my rotors in the near future...
Anyone else have this problem? Any chance of getting this fixed under warranty?

your brakes are over covered within the first 10,000KM.
Any pictures? I've no idea what you mean by rusted with a top layer.

Rotors rust. They're cast iron. That's what they do.
Does your car sit, undriven, for more than a couple days at a time on a regular basis?

I can't get any pictures as my winter steelies are on now, I never got a chance to take a good look myself since this was brought up to me by the dealer when I went to put my winters on... by top layer I mean that our rotors are prone to have a layer of rust on them pretty much daily, which gets rubbed off once you brake a couple of times...

yes, it does sit undriven for a couple days at a time every now and then. But would've expected that the rotors would be made with some sort of alloyed steel that is somewhat resistant to rusting/rotting so badly...

Hell no. If you wash your car, you'll find that by the time you're done there's a coating of rust already there. It's generally harmless and just gets wiped off by the pads.
The reason I asked whether your car often sits for days at a time...
If it gets wet and then isn't driven for a few days, that rust will get a chance to build up a little more than usual. If this happens all the time, then the rotor life can be reduced a bit... but it shouldn't be too dramatic.
As I said... rotors rust. It's not like these cars come with cheaper rotors that rust more or something. It's just what they do. You've got an 05... when's the last time you changed your rotors? How many km's have they lasted? And are they really worn or is your mechanic trying to make a buck?

I think the mechanic was trying to make a buck thats all, elt09 unless your feeling any pulsing or grabbing when you brake I wouldn't worry about it.My 3 is an '05 coming up to 60k and all my rotors are fine. And I also get a coating of rust alot on the discs....no big deal.

as the others have said, that rust on the surface of the rotors are fine.
They are gone after a few stops.
The dealer maybe talking to you about the rust between the rotors (our front rotors are vented). Although, I have no idea why that would be an issue
