first impression of deck
after reading a gazillion posts on how good the alpine 9887 is on many different forums, i decided to give it a try. got the deck off ebay for 350 with ipod adaptor compared to 399.99 + tax @ 2001audiovideo. this is my first deck and im still noobish @ sq but the deck is not as good as i thought it would be. i've heard pioneer decks with much better sq (my opionion only). there's so much sound tunning features and i have absolutely no idea how to use them. like the 7 band parametic eq, different frequency, slope settings and much more complicated features. after a little tunning and playing around with the sound features, the deck sounded so much better then i first listened to it. im still figuring out how to use the different features and hopefull it'll sound even better after more tunning. as of now, i wish i got a more simple pioneer deck. hope after learning the features, it'll change my perspective.

Hey Axela, the install looks nice and clean and it looks like your system would ROCK from the components list you have there, but, what subwoofer did you get and whats the power on your amps?....when setting up your sound did you start with all features off and on flat response?....just wondering!

Heres the deal, i got the same setup done at Lockdown for the aftermarket deck location. The problem is when you turn the heat on for Lower fans.. Legs... it hits directly the area where the deck is, which is a big NO NO, second the kit is the cheapest looking thing, even the cig lighter is loose because theres no support from the back, and it's a green colour?????? i wish i got my stuff done somewhere else, they have way better kits for the aftermarket decks and better quality. Not pleased with their work.

Great choice! I have the same deck in my BMW. I think you overpaid though - I got mine from Concepts on Wheels for $300 the first week it came out.

Two suggestions:
- Adjust the lights to either setting 4 (amber/red) or 5 (all red). It'll match your factory backlighting and look a lot better.
- Turn on the Media Expander and be amazed at how nice it sounds.

i have a JL 10w0 in a bandbass box made by ASD kennedy
75w rms to each channel
and 200 watts to sub

and i don't know if i set up the sound with features off and on flat response. i just tuned by playing around with the features and listening to it lol

That's weird...I turned it on and immediately noticed a significant difference in quality. I also found the HU to be a huge upgrade in sound qualify over my stock unit. My system is otherwise stock - factory speakers and amp. Then again, the factory HU on my car is beyond crappy!

I used to have a high-end Alpine head unit a while back. It didn't sound that great right out of the box, but after tuning it (setting the distances from each of the speakers to the driver's position) it sounded incredible!

Ooooo I like... I wonder what is the difference between the 9887 and the 9857 I have...

Visually, my letters are backlit green instead of red. Other than than I donno what the difference is.. maybe you have newer components?

I'm still trying to figure out how all the features work lol. Clement, I'm using the graphics EQ instead of parametric EQ and it's so much more easier to tune. There are just 1 adjustments for each of the 5 bands eliminating the slopes, freqs and db ajustments. the deck sounded alot better after tunning with GEQ instead of PEQ.

I'm considering buying this unit as iPod integration is a must for me, but I've heard stories that you can't change the bass/treble on it unless you buy a $250 add on kit. Is this true?

Hey Axela,

Overall, are you happy with the deck? I purchased one as well, but have not installed it as of yet (too cold). Considering the feature set, it sounds like a great deck.

thanks for the feedback.

Just checked at 2001 here. The deck is $299.

Anyone actually let 2001 install a deck?
