Went to turn on my car this evening and I'm pulling out of my driveway only to see HUGE PUDDLE OF OIL

NO LIGHTS CAME ON
Turned the car off right away and now she's sitting in the garage
Its steadily dripping out of the area where the oil plug is

Car had an oil change 4,000km ago at Ontario Mazda (and all my previous oil changes were at Mazda dealerships every 8,000km). Car has 120,000km on it with out any issues.

SO WHATS UP?? :bang

Update: I just went to check the dipstick after an hour the car has been sitting still and its on the MAXIMUM line AFTER it has leaked all this oil. Could it have been OVER FILLED? Maybe due to the cold weather something triggered it

if its a 2.3, maybe the plastic filter cartridge has a crack on it

Yes it's a 2.3, I was assuming it had a gasket as well.. but true the cartridge has been known to be quite fragile and break if over tightened. With the expansion and contraction of cold from current weather and the engine heating up.. that could be possible too.

Should be an easy fix hun, but I'd take it to the nearest dealer and get it looked at. It just might mean a new filter and gasket.

So essentially another oilchange.

That is what my dad suggested and it kinda makes sense.
Well here's hoping for the best anyways.

Thanks guys for all the feedback http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/embeer.gif

Hey Kitty, smart move to Tow it...don't take any chances and let us know what the problem was.

Thanks,

tow it to the dealer and say WTF to them....cause they were the last ones to chance the oil...

If you can, jack it up, and remove that splash shield. Its super easy to do, and you'll see where its coming from better. If its from the drain plug, just re-tighten... maybe it loosened off ?

looks pretty red... transmission oil?
did you check your fluid levels? Any of them out of the ordinary?

Take of the splash guard and see exactly where it's coming from. If it's the filter, then it's easy to fix. But it would have been the dealer's fault, so let them fix it.

Ah I dont think so
The oil is still pretty fresh and I think the flash gave off a reddish tint
When I parked the car in the garage and put a white mat under neath the oil was clearly brown

Is there a way to check transmission oil levels?

As if I get nailed for being kind :p

Back on topic, I agree with Midnight and Skarbro. Take of the shield, its not that hard and you'll be able to see where the oil is coming from. Do it with the car on and the car off. That way you'll have some knowledge about what should be wrong/fixed when going into the dealer.

So.. result. Cracked catridge housing. The bottome piece had a hairline fracture.

Either way I had the car towed there
She's almost at 130,000km and has been really good to me so its just one of those things

And this is a good reason to do the oil filter conversion to a spin on filter if you have the 2.3
Glad to hear no engine damage, I asume, If you were driving and the oil light came on you might have had some engine damage. Mazda and their cheap oil plastic filter housing, its an important part and should not cheaped out, metal doesn't crack

Hate to say it, but I'm starting to think about this too - just because changing the oil with the cartridge takes significantly longer. I'm going to wait until after my warranty is up though.

I changed mine when I boosted so I could easily have an oil pressure gauge.

Good, cheap mod. It makes sense. :)

wow thats allot of oil! luckily you were able to see it and caught it and didn't go driving it and damage your engine.

Just a thought what, changing the filter mount wouldn't void your warranty would it ???

Nice to hear its all good! and by the way, assuming you took it back to the guys who did the oil change....did they pay the full cost, new catridge housing, towing etc;?? .....just curious.

I do my oil changes at Ontario Mazda (Mississauga) but I live in Hamilton so I had the car towed to Mountain Mazda (which I was happy to see totally new staff overhaul and the service manager was super cool).

Regardless I'm gonna send an email to the service manager of Ontario Mazda explaning the situation (over tighting resulting in a crack) and see what happens from there

Is there a DIY for the for catridge filter change to a spin off one? Might attempt that in the spring

It's the same for the 3. I'm going to be doing this after my warranty is up for sure now. I see no benefit to having the cartridge type except for environmental reasons.
