View Full Version : Wheel / Floor shaking at 120km/h

Hey,

I notice on some stretches of the 404, my steering wheel and floor would shake alot. The movement is quick but the amount moved is small.

I don't think it is the tire balancing as it has happened
on RS-As (OEM rims)/S Drives (OEM rim, mounted/balanced)/Snow tires (16'' steelies, balanced last year).

If we assume it is NOT tire balancing causing this issue. Any one have any idea what it might be?

thats weird, so basically its been happening all along? How old is your car ?

on most stretches of the highways around the GTA
its messed like that.
I got my car in feb 2006.

I'm at a lost on why this is happening.

id take it in. So it only seems to happen at high speeds then?

perhaps a wheel bearing?

I am sometime next week.

that was what I was suspecting but I never heard a wheel bearing doing that.
Its also not making any whining noises that worn bearings typically make.
However, I hope its just that simple.

its normal. I felt that on the 404 as well especially after steelies going north. But i can really feel it cause i have my suspensions stiff

my car wasn't like that until this year.
Its sort of weird, not sure if its caused they repaved the 404 like shit

yea.....i'm pretty sure it is the crappy paved roads. Even driving on mc cowan past 16th going north to sobeys. That stretch gives me that imbalanced wheels feel

thats what it sounds like to me....uneven pavement, gives you the shakes

could it be that your tires are feathering a slight bit? also, if your rim is bent a little bit, it could cause that too. when the shop balances the tires, they don't check for bent rims, they go by what the computer tells them. and even though they're balanced, in the end, the rim is still bent. most balancing machines are rated at 120km/h. bring it back to where you had them balanced and tell them to look at the rim/tire while it's being balanced.

thanks, will take a look at the rims tomorrow, i don't think its bent, i never curbed the steelies. at least not to my memory.

thanks for the input guys!

are the steelies OEM or aftermarket? check for hub size if it's not OEM, it should sit flush with the center hub.

its flush.
i never had issues last year with this set of steelies/tires or my RS-As/Stock rims
prior to this summer season

oh ok...my only suggestion then is to bring it back to where you had them balanced and check to see if it's bent at all...

hmm....interesting! My Mom has a 2006 Mazda 3 GX and when on the highway at high speed, the steering wheel shakes when you brake...

Could it be the same problem?

if it only happens when you brake, it's definitely something wrong with the brakes...maybe the pads are not wearing evenly...or the rotors need to be machined or replaced. get that checked asap.

The fact that its happening on both sets of wheels would be a good clue that its not a wheel balancing problem, but there is an easy way to make sure...lets say at 120kph it shakes and assuming it doesn't at slower speeds, so just go a little faster like 130kph and if the shaking goes away its an out of balance tire, ...if not, then you could have one of several other problems which could cause it, such as wheel bearings, ball joints, bent rims etc;...which means of course you'd have to take it in to have it inspected.

good luck and let us know what the outcome is.

No, its not the same as with the OP's problem since his problem occurs without braking.
In your mother's case it 'sounds' like warped rotors.Next time she's braking on the hwy tell her to brake firmly, that means not to just 'feather touch' on the brake, but to press firmly and hold till she gets to the desired speed and if it still vibrates than the warp is bad, if not your still ok, it could just be the pads are unevenly worn with respect to the rotors.Sometimes several firm brake applications can eliminate the problem.
