LOL...

I totally agree that summer mode looks better. And if I had the money, I would probably buy cheap alloys for my winters.

I usually think steelies look bad too, but because they are now on my car and because this is my first car I get excited about everything! wOOt!

Depends which steelies. If they are new and glossy black, then they look good (for steelies). If they are flat black and rusting, then yeah...

They look sick alright, it makes me want to puke everytime I look at my car:whoa....Gotta get some 16" sport rims for next year.

Personally speaking, I have an 04 Mazda3 GT lowered 1 1/2 inches and since my summer tires are 17'' I dont really mind putting on the 16" tires only because it makes my ride look lower.

Aside from the fact the steelies make the vehicle look plain I really think in winter driving conditions its not a matter of how nice your vehicle looks, its more important to get through the winter months without any exterior damage.

On a side note today I was driving north on the 427 towards hwy 7 en route to work. I was in the left lane and a road "de icing" truck was on my right. So my first thoughts were to avoid this guy at all cost.

Reason being this truck was flinging salt out of the rear like it was going out of style.

So I veered to the extreme left and drove on the shoulder to avoid any contact with the salt. I avoided the salt, but now that i look back at what happened I'am thankful that my car has winter tires. If i didnt have winters my car would have been sprayed with salt and right now I wouldnt be in a good mood!

Anyways guys its back to work for me..

Cheers,

AJE:chuckle

Its all how you look at it. When my car is clean and the rims are shiny, it does look kinda mean looking. They go well with the dark tint.

I was going to pimp it out with the scull and cross bone spinner caps w/ red eye's you can get at crappy tire, but they don't have them in 16's.

Winter is a necessary EVIL, so go with it.

...I still prefer summer mode!

Am I the only other one who seriously thinks the steelies look awesome on a black 3 sedan? I like the blacked out look. If I ever end up with Rx-8 rims I'd get them powdercoated a satin black.

Put my steelies on.... didn't like the look compared to my RPM2s. Especially with the rusty bits in the middle showing. (Which I had intended to paint over the summer. Oh well.). So I stuck on a set of CT wheel covers.... not sure if that is better or worse than the steelies. So now I am thinking of painting the wheel covers... has anyone done that? If so, how did it hold up through the winter?

I put my winters on today because I drove to work on snow covered roads Wednesday morning and the forecast for Collingwood is showers and wet flurries Mon-Wed. That means snow for sure driving up and over Blue Mountain the next few nights. I bought really good winter tires so I wouldn't have to worry about the crappy plowing in East Butt****istan - I'm damn well gonna get my money's worth out of them.

Don't forget something here guys.

The much maligned steelies, while not looking as sharp as alloy wheels, cover MUCH more of your rotors, brakes and calipers. This means there is less snow and salt and slush spraying on them as your steelies cover a much larger surface area. Of course there is still some muck that will go on them but far far less so than with a wide open alloy wheel.

So think about your poor rotors and calipers this winter and do them a favour. Get them the steelies they deserve.

Steelies...they work hard for YOU.

I wanted to get a black steelies some 2 years ago but I find it expensive to buy as I know there are a lot of good good wheels available out there that are cheap and used. I found a set of 5 pcs. used 15 inch stock aluminum wheels used for a 1993 Mazda MPV and it cost me $80, yes 5 pcs. Although used, there were no dings, cracks and heavy scratches, just a bit cleaning had the winter tires mounted and balanced, woolahhh, it fit perfect to my 2006 M3. Since then, I have used it every winter season.

I'll post some pics when I mount it this saturday if weather permits.

Since they are winter wheels, I don't care if I curb them, haha. They aren't meant to look good to me, they are meant to work good. Which they do.

My 17's are already marked up from the empty and fun Quebec parking lots of last winter. Small rocks + snow/ice + handbrake = loads of scratches.

Rattle Can Spray Paint?

Did you have to sand it down first to get the old paint off and paint?

I want to do red.

dentinger
11-24-2008, 10:43 PM
i used engine enamel.

i used wheel cleaner to clean all the wheels, gave them a good scrub, air blew them dry, sanded them down to rough them up, blew them off again, gave them a good few coats of primer, them several coats of engine enamel spray paint.

altho, i find the paint chips easily, so i'd make sure they are really roughed up, and you prep them really good first.

Somehow, I've never been able to bare the look of steelies on any of my cars, although I've had winter tires all my life. I've always had them mounted on my regular rims. I figure 'why did I pay for a car with nice wheels and only see them 1/2 the year?'. In a worst case scenario, they would look like S*** after 3-4 years, and I'd buy new ones... But then again, I never keep my cars that long anyways :)

Hey, I finally got to try out my tires...... I found a parking lot after the last little snowfall and let "er rip. All I can say is "wow" I had dunlop snows on my gsr and thought they were pretty good but the Maragoni's are fricken awesome. I was doing a slalom course between the light posts and it felt like dry pavement.... stops were on a dime except when I really hammered them and only got a little squirrly once but I was pushing my luck a little..... I highly reccomend the 4-ice tires. I am still waiting for a heavy snow fall to push them to their limits....
