LOL There were lots of threads last year about Speed3 owners who didn't know and were driving into curbs and stuff. You're lucky you figured it out! Get snow tires. :)

You just have to take one look at the tread to realize they stock tires are going to suck mightily in slippery/slushy conditions.

heh. Good thing you realized this before something bad happened!
Once the temperature dips down to freezing or there's any chance of snow, they HAVE to come off. With all-seasons you can get by in the cold, but not with performance summer tires. They're unsafe in the cold even if it's sunny and the roads are completely clear.
This is a good time for everyone to ask yourselves... do you know what tires you have?? If you don't... you should!

heh. On other forums my sig links to my HowTo pages which have good info on tires... but they're all branded "j-body HowTo's" so I didn't bother linking it here.
Maybe I should...

It should be against the law to call any tire an ALL SEASON TIRE.

I think there should be a law that says that if there's more than 5 cm of snow on the roads, and you don't have winter tires, you get some sort of ticket for "unsafe vehicle" or some such thing.
Perhaps have it as a secondary ticket where it's only issued if you've caused some sort of holdup or got stuck somewhere or something.

While its a good idea, this will never go through.
Yes everyone should have winter tires and blah blah blah.
But the government can't force people to spend a few hundred bucks on winter tires. Its borderline communism.
There might as well be a law that says you get a fine for driving a Sunfire.

I acutually asked an acquaintance of mine who happens to be an OPP officer about this a couple of years back and he told me that there is nothing they can do unless the driver does something stupid. The problem is that the tire debate is subjective in nature and not always a problem if the driver is careful.

Yes they can. The law is already there to say you must have your car in good working order. They just have to add the definition to the section about an unsafe vehicle.
Other countries have laws that say you need winter tires all through the winter. I'm not suggesting that. I'm just saying that if you're out in the snow without winter tires, and you cause some sort of obstruction, then you are driving an unsafe vehicle.
There are costs involved in owning a vehicle. Vehicle owners have to pay them. Just like they force you to replace your headlights when they go out.
Heck, can't they ticket you for having bald tires?

While I beileve in winter tires as much as you do, as the previous poster said, its still "subjective". I see jack arses drive like maniacs with good winter tires and other drivers who drive well with all seasons.
Let's face it, the operation of a vehicle is entirely up to the operator of it. You can't just start a pitch fork party because a car doesn't have winter tires. Honestly, I'm getting tired of hiring you wine and b!tch about imposing winter tires on people. Let people learn by themselves. When they get into a car accident, they will realize what they did wrong or didn't do, then they might want to hear you out.
But going on a car forum and constantly preaching winter tires is tiresome...since I am sure 90% of us here already have winter tires and agree with you.

Here we go again! WW's un-ending battle to have all drivers buy snow tires.Do you own stock in rubber WW?...no disrespect but the tires are not the problem as stated quite eloquently by an OPP officer.....Its stupid drivers....Yes I will admit I use snowtires on my Mazda 3 but only because I find it is seriously wanting without them, I don't know why suspension geometry maybe? but, many vehicles out there are quite capable of handling GTA winter storms very well without snow tires, as I can attest to that comment personally having driven several vehicles without them and never having a problem. But in your defense there are many, many novice drivers out there,( new drivers and drivers from other countries which have never seen snow etc;etc;) that maybe should be forced to purchase snow tires as every little bit helps....that's it, every learner or new driver with 5 or less years Canadian driving experience should have to purchase snow-tires.What do you think?

somtimes its just so hard for some people to buy snow tires. They can only afford $1000 to buy a car and they have to spend $300 on snow tires. Another thing is not all people live in a place that allows them to store another set of tires. I have a friend that rents a room in a house and all he gets is a room. He drives a beat up civic that he paid $1200 for and i doubt he'll cough out $300 winter tires to use and find a place to store them.

Remember... I never say everyone has to get winter tires. I just say they shouldn't drive in conditions such as we've had the past couple days without them. :)
How's this... maybe there should at least be a law that says you cannot be on the road with summer-only tires from December to March. Would you all get on board for that?

so ppl that bought ms3 right now instantly have to drive away wif their stock car and go to some place to get snows? u can't order any all season or snows from the dealer?
Wild Weasel
12-17-2007, 03:02 PM
You can get snow tires from the dealer. No problem there, though you might pay more.
You could always take them with you to the dealer. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to put them on for free if it's going to make a sale. Put the 4 stock wheels/tires in the back, and away you go.

Sorry, I thought this was an All-season vs. Winters argument?? ...I agree 100% with your suggestion then, because the way I see it, it definitely would be negligent to drive in winter with summer only tires.

The dealership will give you a good enough deal if you haggle with them a bit. I got a set of 17" alloys for the normal Mazda 3 for $220 each and a set of Toyo winters for $120 each in 215/50R17 for my 'speed. Came to exactly $1500 including labour and all that, plus taxes. The cheapest tire in the size I needed from CT was $250 EACH. Just for their crappy Motomaster brand.
