The parents of a six-month-old baby will have quite a story to tell him when he grows up - about the day a car thief drove off with him in the back seat. But now everyone is breathing a sigh of relief, after the child was safely recovered and a suspect collared in Newmarket.

The scare began just after the start of rush hour Monday afternoon when a car parked outside a home at Yonge and Davis Drive disappeared with the infant still in the back seat. His frantic parents called police pleading for help and their response was instant, deploying nine cruisers and the police chopper to aid in the hunt for the missing red Mazda 3 and its precious cargo.

After a half hour of searching, the distraught parents were told the best news possible - cops had located the vehicle, the suspect and the baby, all unharmed.

Officers cornered the man after the vehicle spun out on the southbound 400 near the Rutherford ramp. A short foot chase followed but authorities caught up to him and hauled him down, while other lawmen recovered the child.

It's not clear why the baby was alone in the back seat, but he's back with his mom and dad.

The doors were probably left unlocked. The report I heard on the radio mentioned the parents were both out of the car to pick up another sibling when it happened.

I read this post before I heard it on the news, and my thoughts are that of the family that was interviewed. They mentioned that they have kids and they do the same in the mornings (turn the car on and start putting the kids in the car). And knowing this happened in their neighbourhood freaked them out. That would definitely put a scar on me too if it happened in my neighbourhood.

Glad the kid was okay.
This isn't too rare with thieves stealing cars with idling in the winter unfortunately.

Wow. I have a 6 month old and I would NEVER leave him in the car with it running. Hell, I would never leave my car unlocked and running without the kid in it. This is too common an occurrence. I'm happy for the parents, but they need to give their heads a shake. Get a remote starter for Pete's sake.

I don't see too many Red Mazda3's out there. Wonder if that made it easier to spot and chase down with the helicopter.

I can only guess that if it was a black mica, it'd be a lot tougher.

In any case, thank goodness there was a happy ending and hopefully people will learn that you cannot leave a running car for even a second. Someone is bound to take free candy.

I was thinking about this, and without knowing the exact circumstances, it's tough to blame the parents.

This sort of thing can happen in an instant if thieves are targeting the car. If they came outside to strap in the baby, and then went in to grab the stroller or something, that's all it might take to have it stolen.

It's a sad state of affairs when people have to worry about this! The person who took the car should be charged with kidnapping and reckless endangerment as well as auto theft, whether he knew there was a kid involved or not!

Honestly, there should NEVER be a situation where the kid is left in the car with the keys are in the ignition - even if it is just to run in for a second. And the reason why is this thread.

Fair enough. You're absolutely right. I'm just not quite sure whether this falls into the category of "common sense" or whether it's something people need to be educated about through stories like this one.

I used to work at a retailer where i have clear visiblity of the parking lot and have been in a situation where parents would come into the store and do their shopping and leave their kids in the car while they shopped. I have called the police on several occassion because there was a child left alone in a running car. Same old story I hear the parents say that it is too much trouble to take their kids out and bring them into the store.

I am glad that this situation had a good ending

It's called laziness, and it might sound crude, but I'm wondering why the parent has not been charged in this! ...seems like a sure case of neglect, remember ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law! ...Personally I never, ever left my child in the car alone even for a second, but then everyone always said I was over-protective.

Key fact: She left the keys in the car! Just utter stupidity!!!

Glad the kid is alright but the mother is a douche...

I'm never one to "blame the victim" in cases such as these but I do hope the mother learned a valuable lesson in all of this.

Just wondering.

How would you handle something like this if you have 2 or 3 kids to strap in the car when you live in an area like her's? For one I know not to leave the car keys in the ignition but just imagine having to strap 2 kids in the car.

Just glad the kid is safe.

1. Have someone help you if you can if not...
2. Strap one "rug rat" in, lock the door go inside the house and get the other "rug rat" quickly.
3. Be back in time to strap in the other "rug rat" and pick up the soother that the original "rug rat" spit out while you went back inside.

this situations just brign to light a few things I don't understand??
1. why do people continue to leave the car running and unlocked??
2. why are people leaving little kids in the car
3. how is it that we need a license to drive but anyone can have a kid?

Glad the child was safe. Could have been worse if the chase had continued.
