I was quoted by Dave Wood Mazda $189.99 for this and I was wondering if this includes the 8 k service too or is that over and above the $189.99 cost?

I am not being stupid, I have never had a new car before so please forgive me for the dumb question :)

I'm also due for the 24k service...

I know it includes the oil change, but I don't know what else in included. The manual only mentions fluid level checks at 24k, so I'd like to know, too, what else is included.

Is this mandatory for warranty purposes? I can check my fluids, that's not a big deal... and I can find better ways to spend the difference between $190 and the oil change!

I just had mine, less oil change.

It is not mandatory to have it done at the dealership, but you must show proof of the inspections and work done for the 24k service.

Thanks Gizzmo_jr! So it has to be done anyways.....

Yes I believe so, 'if' you put a warranty claim through. Your car isn't going to blow up if you don't get the service done, but it's the preventative inspection that you can prove is what you need.

how can u prove it if you do by youself? claim a warranty has nothing to do with this kind service, thats just dealer recommanded service. BUT if you know nothing about your car, then you better get it done. i wont do that in dealer anyway, just about wasting money.

I thought the work still has to be done by a certified mechanic. Regardless at a Mazda dealership or not. But need to show proof you had the service done, like if you had a caliper slide seize or something, which should of been inspected and lubricated at 24k. Had something happened and you wanted to claim warranty saying faulty brake system, well you should of had the service done. This is how I'm interpreting the need for this service, as it is.

Gizzmo_jr, I can't see anything related to the brakes in the manual, it just says to inspect fluid levels (which is done anyways with a regular oil change, this is what is written on my bills).

I really don't see the point of paying over $200 just for an oil change and tire rotation basically..... what can go wrong with the brakes after 24k? My car is in an underground garage almost 24/7 (at work+at home, I'm on the road 2 hrs/day + a few hrs in the weekends).

So the question is, how "mandatory" is this 24k service?

im at Mot right now getting the 24k done. My car is 29k right now. I asked if it was manditory, the guy said i dont have to but the if i was to make a warranty claim they could deny me for not doing the recommended service or whatever. Anyways 189.99 plus tax so $213. If you were to just ask for the brake cleaning itself would be 199 plus tax so whatever.

Check Maintenance Schedule 2 in your owners manual as Gizzmo has posted!
Secondly the only thing you need is records that the oil/filter change and inspections were done to keep with warranty coverage.

IMO,as for the brakes even if the sliders seize up and the brakes screw up there is no warranty on brakes (except the calipers) after 20k anyways, plus its unlikely at 24k to happen anyways...wait till your 48k to worry about brakes.

in the 24k service, its not just an inspection of the brakes. they lube the slide pins. if you do the 24k service, and the calipers seize at 35k, they will be covered by warrenty. if you dont do the service, then they arent covered. if you want to do it or not, thats your call. if your not mechanically inclined, then you might as well do it for that piece of mind.

What a friggin' cash grab by the sounds of it. There's something wrong w/ the fact they charge $200 for a bloated and glorified "21-point" inspection/oil change which, if you choose not to do it because it's not mandatory, will give them an out for any warranty claim if they wanted to because you didn't have the inspection(s) done.

I'll just do it for good "service records"... I have a coupon for tire rotation ($15) I can deduct from the $189.99, plus I get the coffee mug and my lock kit installed.

I can understand why Mazda would refer to an owner's service records for warranty work and use it as some sort of standard to base a judgment against. But if that's the case, then imo the interval inspections should be mandatory and offered at a much lesser cost if still under warranty.

I don't see anything wrong in the inspections, I just have a beef w/ how much the owners are being charged for simple check ups (going by Gizzmo_jr's pic a few posts back).

Just to play devil's advocate, how much is Mazda's hourly service rate?

here in ottawa its like 90 bucks

i'm at 12K right now.
at 8K i went in for the oil change only b/c i have 5 yrs free oil change.
nothing else.

i had my tires "rotated". didn't really, just switched from summers to winters.

my next service *should* be at 16K, but the sticker says 15K?

i'm planning to get them to do my free oil change and charge for the inspection of the belts, fluids etc...

what else should i get checked @ 15/16K?

You must have had you 8K done at 7K and they just added 8K to what you had, or they are just trying to get you to come in more often.

At 8K and 16K I just did a normal oil change (full synthetic mind you)

naw, i made sure it was over 8K
i think they just want me to come in more. i might just go at 16K.
so even at 16K you didn't go for the fluid inspection, blah blah blah, caliper lube, blah xx point inspection.

and my free oil changes are all with that mazda stock stuff... the half synthetic (or so i'm told)

There's no brake inspection/caliper pin lube at 16k only 24/48/72k.

Honestly whats the chance that the sliders will seize at that mileage?, I think quite nominal, plus you really have to wonder if alot of these places bother to lube the sliders at all, I know first hand some places don't, but say they did, customer never being the wiser...but with our brake design it is necessary periodically...I like to add, to those getting the service; just make sure you see them do it, if your going to pay the excessive service price.

Got the service done and also the door lock thingy. Inquired about the Shock Sensor only to find out its on backorder but Mazda should (BETTER) extend the $100 installation rebate for it. Also, they forgot to reconnect the power door switch on the drivers side so I was not too happy about that.

I was informed that now all Dealers should have the Shock Sensors and are no longer on back order. Just did my 24K service and had them install the sensors that time (sensor was no charge).
