Hello all, I just purchased a 2004 M3 GS and wanted to switch the 04 radio for a 07 radio so I can utilize the trip computer thing that you can activate. Will this 07 radio fit in my 04 dash?

thanks for the help

That and you'd need to buy the sensors.

Hey Gizzmo, are you saying it does fit in an 04? plus I wasn't looking for temp sensor/guage I was only looking to gain the trip computer for milage eg.
L/100km. From reading around I thought the 06 and 07 had the capability to activate the fuel/trip that is housed within the radio. Sorry for all the questions/confusion, I'm new at all this.

Ah, well I'm going to take a stab and say yes the unit will fit into the dash. Whether or not the trip/computer will work is another, I'd have to fathom a guess that there is a link with the ECU to get the numbers from somewhere. Since your car is prior to it, you ECU wouldn't understand.

Unless someone on mazda3forums has tried it, I'm doubtful. But hey, if you wanna try go for it. Try a old unit from the scrap yards.

Hi Gizzmo, I thought of that too. But then I figured it might have something to do with the radio being able to note speed and adjust itself by turning the radio up louder. I think its called ALS. I recall the manual stating it self adjusts the radio sound too mask the road noise due to speed. I ask all this because I didnt want to blow 140 on a used radio if its not going to work or at least fit.

All the radio's are interchangable....

BUT

You won't be able to get a trip computer. The computer is integrated into the harness which isn't easily or cheaply replaceable on the 04's.

The only reason to switch out radios would be for the MP3, Minidisc or 6Disc version.

HERE.... a 28 page explanation....

Get a Scanguage II. It plugs directly into the OBDII port underneath and to the left of your steering wheel. My friend has this device for his Yaris, he put it in my MS3 for a cruise cause it has a built in boost gauge, or what they call "manifold air pressure" (MAP) reading.

Also, does anyone want to sell me their '1' button from their stock radio? I lost mine. :chuckle

My i would know if there's any way to change the oem radio by a double-din carpc or dvd player anyway... i just want to keep the trip computer fonction on the actual LCD screen alive and the exterior temperature too, is that possible or... i know that i see a forum somewhere on the net about a guy that show how to do this with pictures, but i can't find that thing back, i had a mazda3 GS 2009, i really want a solution for that problem, but i just dont find any ressources. Thanks for help.

Yes, it's possible...and pretty damn easy too once the stereo is out. However you need the proper dash kit that has a place for the LCD to stay attatched. Sadly, even though my new dash kit is the proper model number, it didn't come with that...so I have to look for an alternative...

Yeah, but i'm sure that a guy, somewhere on the internet, that make a modification, he put like a board somewhere to keep that functionnality, i just don't remember if you look around you can find that thread, is on a forum somwhere, i try to find that.

It's easy to keep the LCD there. If the dash kit didn't come with the L brackets, it shouldn't be too hard to buy/make an alternative. I just haven't done it yet.

As for what stays on the LCD...so far, there's only the temp and 1 option to choose from. However, if someone was really good with electronics and had a lot of time, I'm sure they could come up with a way to bypass the radio and have it function the same way. I think it would just be a matter of figuring out what signals the radio sends to change the info. Maybe find a way to do the same through the aftermarket deck if it has a way. Who knows. I just want the temperature back...so eventually I'll find an alternative and put it back...

I think that i'm just gonna buy a external screen to putting it ont the top of the dash, and plug in it inside of the aux in, and use it by the media button of my actual radio, it'll be more simple, But the problem of that solution is the thieft, too easy to steal...
