View Full Version : Sand Blasted wheels and Winter = Corrosion?

With all this talk about people sandblasting their wheels just before powder coating or painting, got me thinking.

I recently had to have a wheel refinished and it was totally stripped via sandblasting. The front of the wheel is fully finished however the rear of wheel and the lip are still corse and rough. The lip where the tire bead is mounted is also still rough from sandblasting.

My question to you all is how will this stand up to the elements? You know how wheel weights react to salt alone and corode onto painted aluminum.

I'm thinking bare unprotected aluminum will start to buble and eventually lead to slow leaks around the bead of the tire. What do you think?

I think the stripped rim, is going to be damaged by the elements. When they refinished the rim, why did they not do the entire wheel?

Just got the wheel back today and going over it. I'm asking the same question, why wasn't the whole wheel finished. I know the wheel face is really all that matters but I agree that I don't think bare sandblasted aluminum will stand up to the elements.
