2008 Mazda3 Sedan GT (2.3L), 2,200KM no mods...
So I get in my car this morning, turn it on; reach for my iPod to get some music going.. and I notice ticking noise coming from the engine that I don't think I've ever noticed before...
Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what it might be? Or whether it's normal or not?
Thanks!
did you check under the car

Run... it's probably a bomb.
Okay, i could be a million different things, and without looking at it, it is very hard to tell.
Bring it to your dealer, they will take a peak and it shouldn't cost you a thing.

LOL.. I'll check for bombs... :P
If it's not a bomb, I guess I'll take it to the dealership, I don't think it's a warm-up issue as the ticking was still there after I drove to work 15 mins up the highway...
Thanks guys!

Check to see if the ticking sound is coming from the intake manifold.
If you hear it coming from there, then you have to get a new intake manifold.
I had mine done under warranty.

Here's what my engine sounds like :\ almost sounds like I have a diesel engine in there...
Also I noticed a high-pitched whine or "whirring" type of noise coming from the belts on the left side of the engine compartment... the pitch of the whine changes when I turn the steering wheel left or right... also the whining only appears when I'm at a dead stop...
I have an appointment with the dealership tomorrow to have it taken a look at :(
I'm disappointed that I'm already having engine troubles with only 2200 KM on it :/

I hope that recording was outside the car with the hood up. You have a warranty

I had that same problem with my 2.0.
Sounds like noisey lifters. ticky ticky ticky.
Alas, I misdiagnosed that one.
It would happen at start up, but not right away. It took three trips to the dealer and two overnighters to nail it down.
Can not hear it very well with the hood open. The normal engine noise mixes in with it.
Turns out it was the belt and such for the A/C. (Belt has no tensioner)
Never the less, it's fixed.

Mazdachris, how they fixed it? You mean the AC belt had no tension? Does your ticky ticky sound sometimes will disappear? And which dealer are you with?

It was outside the car with the hood up... I took it to a dealership to have it taken a look at and they parked a brand new Mazda3 beside mine and fired it up; and they sounded the same.....
The only issue though is that the ticking heard at the dealership wasn't the exact same ticking I was referring to as the ticking only comes up sometimes.. They just said to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse to bring it in..

No hint where that ticking sound comes from? Which dealer you're dealing with? I need to bring mine too, i need to hear if it's the same sound. Thanks for the update.

If the sound goes away after a while that's one thing, if it persists and they tell you to keep an eye on it, check it out at another dealership. It's like taking your kid to another doctor for a second opinion. LOL! It doesn't hurt. I'm serious though.

The sound comes and goes... and when I took it into the dealership it was one of the times that the sound wasn't there I guess... if it returns, I'll be taking it back in...

The ticking noise seemed to be louder at the right side of the engine bay than it did on the left hand side of the engine bay...
I took the car into Kanata Mazda on Palladium drive.

Same spot at the right side and it comes and go, i even waited that ticking sound to disappear before i turn off the engine. Mine will occur after a few minutes of driving. What about yours?

eeeek
I'm having the same thing happen
My car has 134,000km on it though
My bf suggested it could be noisy lifters as well - how severe is the issue if it is lifters?

They probably just need adjusting.Did you have them inspected at the 120k service?

Mazdachris, how they fixed it? You mean the AC belt had no tension? Does your ticky ticky sound sometimes will disappear? And which dealer are you with?
They replaced the A/C belt. Don't know why that would go so early. It is very hard to diagnose. The A/C belt does not have a belt tensioner. Just the fan belt does. It's troubling to duplicate at the dealer. By the time I drive there, 15 or 20 kms, the sound is gone. Usually reappears after sitting overnight. So I left it overnight. The next morning I drove in with my other car and started it up with the service manager. No noise of course. So, after about 3 minutes, I closed the hood and said my mechanics at work thing it's the belt. So, he said he would order one just in case. So, after saying goodbye and "closing" the hood. The noise became dominent. He heard it, and booked it in.
So, if this is the same issue, it might not be, try idling the car in the morning with the hood down and have a listen near the passenger side front tire. Belt is at the lower part of the engine bay.

Well it says the usual; inspected hoses, seals blah blah blah
But I didnt actually mention it to them. They are pretty good with this kind of stuff

The .wav sounds pretty similar to mine which is pretty new, maybe like 4k on it... I have noticed the engine to sound kinda weird when listening to it from outside at idle, especially that mechanical buzz. It sounds fine from inside though, maybe I'm just used to the roar of an e90 :)
PS. I've found the source of the mysterious ticking noise! It's a pipe bomb! HOORAY!!!! *boom* lol somebody beat me to it
