A mechanic at a Mazda dealer told me they use semi-synthetic oil. Does anyone know the brand?

if you own the car, use synthetic, if you lease it, do whatever cheap.

Thanks for asking this question jeromethebus, as I was wondering the same thing.
If I request synthetic at my next oil change, how much more is it? I'm not concerned about the cost (I'll gladly pay it), I'm just curious.
Also, does using synthetic alter the oil change schedule at all or can I just keep rolling on the manufacturers table of time/mileage?

The dealers will always use Semi-Syn in our vehicles, not conventional oil because thats what they call for.(Unless they want a lawsuit against them) :chuckle.
5w-20 synthetic is what most are using year round, it will cost you about $45 more at the dealer, unless you go thru Flipdaddy at MoT he's cheaper and they have Castrol Syntec.
Also even using synthetic you should still do your oil changes at the prescribed 8k intervals, so not to void your warranty.

Sure I do it all the time, and it depends on what brand of synthetic oil you purchase as to what it will cost...for instance, you can get Mobil1 @ Walmart in 5L jugs for $45 taxs in.

I'll be switching to Royal Purple on my next change permanently.
Royal Purple is definitely good stuff, but I wouldn't go as far as saying its the best....there's other good brands out there too, like Redline, Amsoil etc;...its just a matter of how much you want to spend.

I continue to use Mobil1 is becuase It far more easier to get my hands on and its a bit cheaper then RP, AMsoil, REDLINE, Motul and such..
I feel that going anything "better" then Mobil1 Is an overkill for the 3....

It depends on how you look at it...I can get a case of Royal Purple for basically the same price as Mobil1. But the main reason I am switching is that I used Royal Purple for a time on my 3 (2 oil change periods to be exact) and than switched back to Mobil1, I noticed a definite improvement in gas savings while using Royal Purple, (approx 70km per tank), enough I calculated to pay for my oil change each oil change interval. So in actuality it is cost efficient to switch...than there's the slightly better protection. But the savings is reason enough.

I don't buy their claims.
