View Full Version : What to do with off-season tires?

Okay, I will be buying a set of winter tires, even if they are only on the car for six weeks. Winter is never-ending this year! :flaming

Question: after I get the snows put on, what the heck do I do with the other set of wheels? Will they fit in my sedan trunk? Will Tires23 store them for me? I guess I could just go fetch them with my wife's minivan.....

Don't store them in the trunk. You don't want all that weight in there for 6 months.

*Why* are there no :thwak: emoticons on the site? 'Cause I need one about now ^^^^^ :chuckle

Dammit, I'm not sure if you are serious or not!

I just stack them in my garage. If you have space I think thats the most ideal thing to do with them.

Okay, I guess I wasn't clear; sorry about that. I have enough room to store the things. The trick is.... how do I get them home? Every other car I have owned has either been a hatch or a minivan, so tossing a set of wheels in the back hasn't been an issue. My new Mz3 is a sedan, and the trunk doesn't look THAT big!

use your back seats as well. Two in the trunk and two on the back seats...

+1. They should bag them up for you. They did that for me. I brought a drop sheet for my back seat just for extra care.

Thanks guys! Now I just need to hear back from Tires23 on when they can put the tires/wheels on for me.

BTW: I posted my question in this thread because I was also wondering about specifically Tires23 being able to store them... this has turned into a bit of a thread-jack, so maybe a mod should move it elsewhere. Thanks.

Yup, two in the trunk, two in the back seats. Tires23 should label the tires's positions and put them in bags.

Try not to put them too close to a heat source which my dry the rubber. I've read it's not so good to just stack them on a cold surface.

I have mine in my basement stacked on the carpet with an unfolded cardboard box between each tire.

Every year there's a sale at CDN Tire for these things:

I have two. They work great in the garage.

If you don't have space in the trunk (like me), you can fit 4 in the back seat. 2 on the seat, 2 on the floor.

Of course if you guys had a hatch, this whole thread would not be needed. :)

Just curious... what made you decide to buy winter tires now? Were you just saving up or did something happen to make you decide you needed them?

I just bought my Mz3 2½ weeks ago... I had really agressive all-seasons on my old car, which were decent enough in snow. I gave the RSAs a chance, but I'm tired (ha ha) of sliding around, and we are sure to have at least another snowfall or three between now and mid-April.

Can't blame him for buying winter tires now. Especially when the bulk of the snowfall this year has been in Feburary. He probably gets a better price on them now than during the mad rush in October & November.

I guess being a hatch owner, I never even saw this "Where Do I Put My Tires In The Car" thing as a problem...haha.

i too just got my 3 a couple weeks ago and it has all seasons on it... i thought i could tough out the rest of the season with them, but after today's drive home i'm not so sure... i'm thinking i can probably score a good deal on some winter tires at this late stage in the game :S

Well, I had the snows put on today, on the way home (was supposed to be yesterday, but they didn't have any 16" rims on hand, had to get a set in ... not their fault, my own damn fault, I should have done this a couple weeks ago, but grrrrr :bang)

Wow, what a drastic difference. I basically drove the stock Goodyear RSAs back to back with the new Dunlops Sport 3Ds, and the improvement is nothing short of phenomenal! :bana2

Definitely worth it, IMHO. I got my new snows on steelies, so they will be easy to swap out in a few weeks, and then put back on in the fall.

im starting to get used to my RSAs sliding around and driving like a granny so i'll drive through this winter with them on. But next winter I'm definitely getting winter tires. its so bad i can't even get up my driveway with stock tires. When is the best time to get winter tires? now during Winter or Summer or October-November?

Prices are the same as in Tires23 winter special thread... only trick is there isn't much selection. That said, I'm *really* happy with Dunlops... they weren't my first choice, but when they were suggested to me and I read up on them, I was really impressed.

BTW, the Dunlops are 205/55/R16 on 16" steelies.
