View Full Version : SU rear mount and winter...

I had a problem since sunday night after the big storm right. I managed to get the car out and off my street, did some running around with the g/f and then chilled over at her place. Late that night, I go to leave and start the car and a vibration from hell is felt/heard. I'm talking 2 times worst then the first time when I installed my StreetUnit mount. Items in my hatch tray are rattling, super bad droning at 3k and 5k rpm, I can feel the engine's vibrations through the entire car, etc.

I drive around for a while sunday night after I get some gas, really warm up the car, figured it was an ice blockage or something. Checked the rims, all good there. It was definitely motor RPM dependent so that leaves the suspension out of the equation. I had "motor mount" on top of my mind once I figured that out. I searched around M3F see if the liquid motor mounts can freeze or something, notta. Never had a problem all winter so the SU mount shouldn't of changed at all. Really hope didn't need to replace a motor mount, couldn't see when/how I could of broken it.

Fast forward to today, after work, get home and put the car up on jacks. Get underneath with a light and sure enough ice. LOTS of it. I musta been plowing along my road more then I thought. Mazda had a design flaw with the rear lower mount being in a 'cup' within the crossmember but then again the SU mount is super thick compared to stock. Alittle heat gun, get the ice that was packed in there, trust me it's no fun running around with a solid mount essentially. Funny it finally happened now, meaning that cup/housing is the first item under the car past the plastic engine splash shield and that something like this hasn't happened to me previously this winter. I've scrapped along deep powder but I think sunday's ice/granule/packed powder mix was the right combo.

So, just FYI if this happens to someone else. Don't freak out, get the car into a warm place or wait until it melts out.

Good to know for those that have the mount for sure!

I had a similar problem I had to much snow buildup in my wheels between the discs and the inside of the rim... and it was more than enough to toss the balance WAY off, same effects your describing but intensified with speed not rpm... a quick power washer spray and was bacl to normal... had me really woprried though for a few mins... a-o-k now.

I've been having the same issue with snow packing between my winter steelies and the discs... almost feels like I'm driving on warped rims :) But a quick spray gets rid of it promptly...

I think this year has been really bad for snow creeping in everywhere..... I've had to clean my rims multiple times as well :(

Oh well..... Spring is right around the corner :)

Yeah I have vibrations too!! I notice when I get my car washed they go away. I figured it was snow or ice build up. But only at 100-120 does it really affect my driving. But it does feel like a wheel problem.
