I use Mobil-1 5w20 exclusively.
For plugs - Stick to the OEM NGK plugs. It's hard to find aftermarket plugs that work correctly in an FI car.

mobil 1 is very good. But it also depends on your price? Some oils are close to $10.00 per litre while some are around the $6.00 - $7.00 per litre.

I run Royal Purple.... one of the best for sure :)
Also one of the only true synthetics left. Seriously though.... you wont notice a diff between them all :)

+1 royal purple! less than 8$ a quart
And they say it add HP :whoa
But mainly very good for the engine, keeps it in good shape. Ive seen royal purple only engines after a lot of mileage and it's real clean!
But Mobil easier to get! Walmart might even sell that stuff :chuckle

My buddy gets Royal Purple pretty cheap, so I am grabbing it from him. Lower than $8/quart too :) I usually grab a case or two at a time.
K&N and OEM Filters are the only thing I will use anymore, and for sparkplugs, I would suggest NGK Iridium. They are great plugs and last a while. With the boost though, I run Autolite 103s, gapped around 0.37" :)

Well Mobil1 has been offering Synthetic Oil since 1974 (with a PAO-based 5W20 formula).
I would imagine they would make a decent Synth.
I myself in the past have usually used Castrol Synthec for my former Mazda 3 GS.
My friend Brian (who runs a Turbo Protege5 called the MP5T) swears by Royal Purple and so do alot of shops I've dealt with (including most of the guys in my club).
However I've heard differing stories about Royal Purple. A friend of mine who rides a Supercharged Mustang was told by his tuning shop NOT to use Royal Purple and that their warranty on his Supercharger install would be void if he did. They said it's because certain additives in the oil can cause issues with superchargers and turbos. Now I'm not sure what exactly he was referring to.. and to be honest .. I'm looking further into this (I might even end up contacting that shop for further explanation).
He was informed to use Mobil1 from the start.
So as I'm here with my new Speed3 at 1300KM's I'm being cautious about what oil I use during my next oil change.
I am also told that I should keep the conventional oil that was stock on my engine until the break-in period is over. It's said that synthetic is too viscous that it doesn't allow for a proper break-in which requires a certain amount of friction.
I am looking into all of these.

I've mentioned this before in another thread, but what the hell, ...I am now a convert to Royal Purple Synthetic, reason being; I used Mobil1 mostly, but decided to switch to RP for a couple of oil changes just to experiment, then I went back to Mobil1.The whole time paying close attention to various things such as gas mileage, ease of starts, idling, etc;...for the most part while on RP I didn't notice much difference, but I did notice quite an improvement in fuel mileage, enough so that the money saved on fuel payed for the price of the oil...now I just have to say thats awesome.So needless to say Royal Purple in my baby from now on! :)

lol Im almost at 4000km and gonna get rid of that break-in oil real soon just waiting for a bit warmer weather for the 5w20. Because it's suggested to use 5w30 during the winter...
i changed my stock oil around 2500km, the tech told me the same thing as kept stock oil for the break-in but not more than 3000km. i saw the oil when they did the oil change, they are dark, very dark. holy, i had never seen the oil been that dark from a 2500km car.

Theurgy - You should call up the shop and see. That makes no sense at all that they would recommend Mobil1 over Royal Purple. RP is a higher grade of oil. Mobil1 used to carry the same grade, but downgraded recently (still a great oil though!). I can attest to more than a couple buddies running aftermarket turbo kits with RP, and nothing but good results. I run 15W40, so its THICK! heheh :)
As for break-in... I would use the dealer recommended. That wont hurt at all. The Mazda 5W20 they are using is actually Semi-Syn. After that, go for Syn... its not much more, and the piece of mind is great. Forget the fact the RP advertises HP gains. In a low HP motor they are minimal at best, but use it for all the other reasons :)
-John
PS - Brian is a cool dude. We chatted a long time at Meeting of the Mazdas like 3 years ago lol.

John:
Yeah I totally agree, the differing advice seem to be just brand hogwash to me and I kinda doubted it but i got a while before i gotta do my next oil change so i prefer to be safe than sorry.
Myself I've heard nothing but great things about RP, either from the guys at No Limits here in Ottawa or the guys from HHP Racing in Delaware when I was down there for my friend's Chrysler 300C Cam swap last summer. They all swear by Royal Purple bar none... so to hear this just last week seemed odd.
Thanks for the heads up John... and hoping maybe we can meet up at the next MoM!

I think somebody has mislead you. 5W20 is a lighter oil and should be used during the winter and not 5W30. ...5W30 is a heavier oil and should be used in summer or just use 5W20 all year...

It's not rocket science to do an oil change. Dealers probably give the job to the worst mechanic anyways...

You have it backwards, thicker is not better for winter, its better for summer.Think about it; In extreme cold do you want a thicker oil running in your engine? ...
Most of the time the oil changes are done at dealerships by the apprentices, not by the worst mechanics.They are just as capable as anyone else, more so really in the sense they should know our vehicles better.The reason being apprentices get paid by the hour and Licensed Mechanics Flat rate.

FROM 2007 MANUAL:
Recommended Oil:
Use SAE 5W-20 engine oil.
Oil container labels provide important
information.
A chief contribution this type of oil makes
to fuel economy is reducing the amount of
fuel necessary to overcome engine
friction.

Well you should change your order because the 5W-20 will be useless to you and don't even think of using it on your Speed because you will definitely be putting your turbo at risk, not to mention your warranty.

Yeah, the added heat from a turbo means a thicker oil. Although, I dont have a speed3 so I dont know what the manual calls for. I run 15W40, which is like Deisel Oil, but its whats recommended, and so far, so good.

I've never seen RP in jugs, atleast not around here, maybe when you go south of the border you might find it.If not just buy one of those oil catch containers from CT they work pretty good.

$9 a quart is a rip-off.. even from my local dealer (Benson's) they quoted me $7.75/quart
And in a group buy by the case.. I'm getting $6.75/quart.

Not too bad! The shop I used are out in Whitby, the name was Overdrive Automotive. The owner's name is Gord. If your interested, it is usually $85 +tax if you buy a whole case. He used to get us to buy 3+ for that price, but if you call him, I am sure he'd cut ya a deal.
Just to keep in mind when you need it without GB pricing :)

How many quarts of oil do we need for an oil change?
(and can someone convert that to litres for me too please? haha)
2.0L <== ?
2.3L <== 4.4L
2.3turbo <== 5.5L
one quart = 0.97...L , do the math.

For the regular, non-turbo 2.3l you'll need 4.5 (US) qts, (with filter change)....Its listed in your Owner's manual.
