Alright I know ther are a few of you from Richmond Hill/ Markham. Not sure if any of you are seneca students who attend the Markham Campus... but wow what a pain in the ass!! Went to drop my gf off for her afternoon class yesterday and get stuck on the driveway into the school because of picketing cafeteria & janitorial workers.
Now I don't have a problem with those on strike, I do however have a problem when it becomes a safety issue. Of course I started arguing with one of the guys because they are blocking the entrance into the driveway. which means only one vehicle can sit at the entrance while the rest of them wait on allstate parkway backing up traffic. This is not the only issue as there are vehicle who are trying to come out but can't because a) you can't see past their big ghetto trailer is blocking the view of those leaving the lot.
I told them that this was eventually going to cause an accident, to which I was told it's not their problem, they aren't allowed any further on the campus as they will be escorted off the property, and how they've contacted the local police and what they are doing is legal and the local PD is aware of this. While I was waiting to turn I almost witnessed two accidents both which would have been t-bones.
After arguing with me, the :AH then told me to support them by not buying anything from the cafeteria and to send Aramark (the employer) an e-mail to which I laughed. How do they expect to find sympathy from the students when they are causing them so much trouble.
This morning when my gf proceeded to go to class, she was held up at the picket line for more then 15 mins, now from what I've been told from a friend who is president for a local union, they can hold you for a maximum of 15 mins, no longer... and that being an educational institute, once the student states that their right of an education is being violated, they must let the student pass, which did not happen this morning, so my gf got fed up and laid on the horn, to which she was told the more of a scene she causes the longer they will hold her.
To me this is not appropriate, while my gf shouldn't have mouthed off she tends to get very hot under the collar when it comes to stupidity. I gave them a chance to explain their position yesterday, they are striking for benefits and increased wages. To which I inquired how long the individual had been working for them I was told about 2 years. So I then proceeded to ask, why over the last 2 years they'd been okay with no benefits why is it suddenly a big deal? To which the gentleman had no response to my question.

I've always believed unions have their right to withdraw their services if their contracts expire. I never knew that part of their contract involved making sure access to their place of work was always clear.

when shit hit the fan?? I have no problems with a union as long as they are peaceful and don't force their opinion... as soon as people get mad or violent is where I lose respect for them... plus it always made me laugh your whining about a 25 cent raise, but spend 3 weeks earning strike pay so way to go buddy... :chuckle

as for your school.. from the stupid handout they were given they are supposedly the only campus who doesn't have benefits and make the same money...
As a business student I'd like to summarize my formal opinion on Unions: THEY SUCK
Wish for me expand? Come to meet and we'll talk ;)

No need. I feel your pain. Try being married to a teacher for a while. You learn to bite your tongue and do this :bang quite often when her militant friends come over.

the TAs at UofT were on strike in my second year, and they would block us for upto 16 mins
i supported thier cause, so i didn't complain, they didn't have to let us go so we could have education, this right to education idea is stupid, everyone would say they are there for a class. of course they are not gonna let u go until the 16 mins are up. however, when i told them i supported their cause and such they usually let me thru fairly quickly.
Will, u dont think they deserve the same standard that others doing the same work have? of course they should have it!
and if they are only allowed to picket in a location that could lead to safety issues . . well then perhaps they should be allowed on campus so that their picket can be safer and more effective.

not a surprise as a buisness student . . . what about as a person?
(we can talk at a meet, not here)
hehe, I think that could be quite the engaging conversation since I've worked in unions as well as non-unions in numerous industries. :D
Save it for the next time we meet ;)

Well my friend this brings up an interesting discussion.... and why I am not always pro unions... my problem with them is that everyone gets treated the same... which is not always fair. Why should joe schmoe who doesn't work as hard as Harry... get the same wage? or work at a smaller facility yet still make the same money.
In the case of this seneca campus the student population is about a 1/4 of the size of the other campuses. I'm not questions their work ethic, but.. truthfully speaking different divisions get different amounts of pay. Why should they all make the same money? The benefits thing I'm for and I understand.. but the rest of it I'm sorry.... To give you a little more info on why I feel this way.... is that of the labour issues that have occured within CAA over the last year or so. The North & East Ontario club went on strike... because they wanted wages that were similar to ours, however their club only has 150,000 members where ours (South Central Ontario) has over 3.5 million members.... they handle approximately 1000 calls on average a day... between all their departments... membership road service etc etc. whereas we average about 20,000 calls/ day... even more on a really busy day.... so why do they deserve the same amount of money...?? They are also all deparmentalized.. so ERS only handles those calls membership only handles those calls... where our office is for the most part x-trained so we all handle all calls......
As I mentioned before they got hired with no benefits and a low wage.. they weren't forced to take the job they did so... on their own so why get rewarded for their own stupidity??
As for the "right to an education" how can you bite the hand that feeds you?? you want students to support your cause yet you hold them up at the picket lines and make them late for tests and classes?? LIKE DUH... how stupid is that..... as well bear in mind my friend.. they are not picketing aramark themselves... as they really should be... they are picketing an educational facility... where students must pay to attend. Also... how many strikes do you know that only run from 9-5?? unless this is some new executive strike lmao where you only have to do it p/t or when its convenient... not to mention its only the workers from this campus on strike.. so a group of 12 is hardly worthy numbers to make a point... especially when you figure that the cafeteria is still open and doing business as normal... I'm not a huge fan of unions.... and this is coming from someone whos job was saved a few years back when I was younger by the union. It just makes me laugh... cuz most union's are headed by some idiot.. who couldn't give two sh*t's about his union members since he collects a cheque one way or another.

Unions always pander to the lowest common denominator.

Gotta love Seneca, i went to the Newnham campus, my second year there was the wonderful colleges' strike which took like 3 months and they condensed the ciriculum. It's not good going into an exam knowing it's worth about 80% of your mark...

I hated Aramark in our caf in Seneca don mills. When I went there they charge extra for EVERYTHING, extra napkin, extra ketchup, extra fork & knifes!! They also had policy that didn't let student sit in the caf to play games/chill unless they are eating their crappy food.

well i find this comical.... there are two entrances to the Markham campus... but they only block the main one.. :chuckle now honestly how can you be serious about striking but leaving the other side of the building open hahahahahahah not only are they dumb but obviously their union rep is no better a real champ!!

So for those who don't know the BS continues at the Markham Seneca campus... now really my favourite part is that they only block one entrance to the school.. so like duh.. go to the second one... now I like this so much cuz of all the dumbass students who still go in or come out the main entrnace and sit there waiting....
Sadly however as any desperate union will do anything to try and get attention... they have started "faking being hit by cars" Happened to my gf and her friends the other day... they refused the piece of paper they hand out because my gf's friends car is already filled with them... so she started arguing with the union rep. As she put the car in reverse to move out of the driveway they surrounded the vehicle, so she put the car in park and in doing so the car moved a bit and magically hit one of the protestors... as he began crying "my knee my knee" and then they took a picture of her plate and said they were calling the police... now my gf's friend is the worst one to try and call on a bluff as she started freaking out and said F**K you I'll call them for you. Needless to say she called the police after they let her by, and even went to the CRC as per my advice just to cover herself, after explaining the situation the officer at the CRC started laughing... and cried foul. Stating that all the headlines about a student being charged at Seneca for hitting a striker is bs.. as there have been no charges laid and reports taken.
Way to go strikers.. you've reached a whole new low!!
