Wont be covered under warranty, as rust coverage is for perforation only, not surface rust. I was worried when I bought the Mazda3, after seeing the Proteges.

did you do a rustproofing? if YES, you can go there ask them if they can do something to slow down the rustting. but its too late anyhow.

I have the same problem on my passenger side in the same spot, I took it to Ontario Mazda and they said that something must have hit that spot for the paint to chip off and is not covered under warranty even though I bought the rustproofing with my car purchase. They claim they don't cover surface rust

got rid of my 04 because of rust... It seems to be frequent. The dealer told me it cost them a lot to fix it all and re paint. Anyways seen lots of 04 do that! I was over the 80km as well :( Got my speed and gotthe lifetime warranty rust proofing done right away!

I don't think your rust proof warranty would cover it. If you use oil like Krown they would be able to get the oil in betwwen the joints, bumper and body. If you have the tar-wax water might get trapped between the tar-wax and body on the back of the rear fender or its plain and simple poor paint and or the primer...Just a thought...don't see any on my car, always garaged which helps..

hey...still got it for a year or so and might buy it out...we will see how things go...
at least the next driver wont have to worry right?
seems like a pretty common thing .. sorry to hear im not the only one...
if it has already started rustting, whatever you do is too late unless you change the whole part. i dont think dealer will change the part tho.

isn't the bumper plastic, to fix the rust, have to take the bumper off to get to the metal lip where the bumper and body meet...

i dont know what is your question to the quote. bumper is plastic indee, so you think that dealer will change the metal part of rear (i cant see how)? they are most likely sand off the rust then repaint that area, but the rust will come back soon.

A competent enough body shop could probably cut out the affected area and weld in a patch piece.
However, finding a shop that will take the time to do that is rare.
sounds like its just surface rust...
have them remove the bumper cover - sand it off and repaint - get them to spray some rustproofing on the backside of the quarterpanel where the water may be sitting (on the lip)...have them put a little urethane tape or something on the outside part of the lip (the painted part) that meets with the bumper cover...maybe there is some rubbing of the bumper cover against the 1/4 panel and that has worn the paint off??

hopefully turns out ok!

U guys can go to scrap yard and hopefully find a panel to replace it if anything. I've seen a lot of cars rusting where the gas lid is. I think sometimes ppl pump too much gas and it overflows and they leave it there.
Im not sure but i think gasoline are catalysts that help speed up rusting lol. Im always scared thats why everytime it overflows a little i immediately take the windshield washer at the gas station and i put it on to rub it away or even dilute the concentration until i am able to wash it.

the gasoline will immediately strip off any wax etc that you have on your paint....but as far as making it rust (per se) the gasoline will evaporate before it has any chance to do anything other than removing wax/paint treatment

well got the car back and they did an "okay" job.
you would have thought the bumper would have been painted as well but they re-painted the fender and rustproofed and sealed the affected areas.
i guess we will wait and see what happens!!
thx for the input

I actually would not have expected them to paint the bumper, as I assume it would be off the car during the fix. I am getitng some quotes for mine this weekend.

I have the same issue on my 04, its a problem with all the mz3's.
Just bought mine used of course, and noticed it on all the other one's that i looked at.
Don't know what to it, but i guess ride it out for a bit, then take it to a rust proofing place to slow it down :(

the corrosion warranty is longer on the newer cars. 04 was 3 years and now it's 5 years on the new cars...figure out why yet? repairs can be as high as 1000$+ unless you know a good body shop. And the more you wait the worst it gets.
The design of the rear wheel well is the problem. It has a lip that is completely exposed to rocks flying off the wheels (the part that rolls in towards the wheel). Check on some other cars, and you'll notice no lip (ex: Jetta) or a plastic or rubber protector (ex:subaru) (Cars
This chips the paint and rusts starts, and unfortunately Krown does not warranty it because it's surface rust.
What can we do to prevent that?
I'm thinking some kind of plastic trim like the Volvo XC90 has.
Anyone knows if there's an aftermarket solution for a Mazda 3?

Sorry FYI it has always been 5 years and it should be the longer you wait to oil-spray the worse it gets :chuckle

3 yrs Comprehensive, 5 years Major component, 5 years perforation...the comprehensive has changed since 04' but the perforation has always been 5 years, and not just with Mazda but a standard with most all other manufacturers....lol.

my car is in MOT today to have it looked at (and serviced among other things). i'm hoping it'll be covered.

come on guys tell us what year your car is and when it was put on the road.
Mine is a 2005, on the road april 2005, so far no rust..garaged and never winter driven might help

I have a 2004 hatch, purchased April 2004, on the road May 2004. I have rust spots on both sides at the locations in question. I'm thinking of putting some primer and touch up paint to at least cover up the rust, slow it down a tiny bit.
There's not much you can do tho.

I saw the other post by Zoom Zoom Girl.. and that's crazy. Fortunately I'm okay right now (05) but i'm now paranoid. It has been rustproofed... but her post is just nuts! A 4 year old car shouldn't be looking like that.

I noticed rust along the rear wheelwell after this winter. Mine is a 2004.
Those who got their rust problem repaired under warrenty, which dealer did you go to? Anyone in the GTA checked with their dealer and what kinda answer did you guys get?
Mine is an 04, rust on both the rear drivers side door and 90K and this year on the rear wheel well near the bumber at 140k
The door that was rusting was covered by a body shop that had previously replaced the door due to vandalism.
I took my car to Burlington Mazda for the rust on the rear wheelwell. It was covered with NO issues/questions whatsoever! In fact I had a harder time convincing the body shop to fix the rust on the door after they replaced it :S

To all who posted here with stories of corrosion on their cars, please submit your entries here: http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=25439 I am compiling a list of other Mazda3 owners dealing with corrosion and blistering paint. Once I have this completed, I'll be sending it registered mail to Mazda Canada with a very nice, diplomatic letter, stating that since this is such a common issue (and expensive to fix!), they need to offer some compensation.....
