When I have my key in the ignition and in the run position, and I opened up the hood I heard a buzzing sound. At closer inspection it appears to be a solenoid chattering.......and buzzing on and off extremely rapidly. It seems to be coming from the general vacinity of the intake area

I can only assume its not supposed to be doing that....especially with the engine not running.

I think I am going to start by pulling off the connectors for the Varible Air intake solenoid, the Variable Tumble solenoid......and maybe the Purge solenoid......to see if and when the sound stops.

Anything else I should check?

I am not getting a cel, but it doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

Any ideas?

My 2 month old '08 does the same thing....

I have no idea the parts your naming...
but maybe it's the electric throttle body? If so, it's normal.

no, its not the throttle body. I put my hand on it and it wasn't doing anything.

Its definitely a solenoid.

I can't imagine this is normal. Solenoids have a mechanical life to them......X number of operations.

If its buzzing its likely doing maybe 10 operations per second or more.....at that rate it won't last very long if its not dead already.

I believe the tumble control moves a flap at the entrance to the cylinder to cause the air to tumble and hence provide a better fuel air mixture.

I think the variable Air intake, controls a flap in the manifold to change the size of the manifold, and the purpose of this is to help provide a flat torque curve......as a fixed manifold would only provide a peak torque at a fixed rpm. Having the flap should essentially provide two torque peaks.
