View Full Version : Static shock!

I get shocked 100% of the time with this car! Has anyone put on those tacky "static straps" from the 80's?!...lol...

I was thinking of getting one and mounting it mid-chassis underbody so no one can see it...any thoughts?

Some members have suggested rubber mats.

Snuggle, anyone?:chuckle

:)

I don't think it's car-specific, since practically every car shocks me. :bang

Whoa! This is such a bad idea it's not even funny!!

Hold a key in your hand and touch the metal door frame as you exit. It acts as a lightning rod and discharges the static without pain.

This has only happened to me a couple of times and even then it was rare. I'm assuming that those members with leather interior don't have this problem as much. When I switch to the rubber mats I bought from Joe at MoT the problem disappeared for me.

Seriously though, that "lighting rod" quote made me take notice. And not in a good way.

erm...I know how to get out of the car...obviously, if I'm talking about the strap, I need something a little bit more effective than me having to:

1. think that I'll get shocked
2. get stressed enough about it to HANG ON to a door to exit the car...

I'm looking for a solution, not another discussion into dead threads...

Sorry, I was just throwing out alternatives to something "tacky" and "lol".

everyone's a comedian in here...I'm surprised we haven't cured cancer yet through all the well-thought out injectures that gets vomitted...

Anyway...to stay on topic, I'm open to:

1. a static strap...anyone tried? I personally despise them, but I'm so fed up with the shocks, I'm even willing to go this route...I think like $10 thru princess auto...

2. anti-static spray...anyone tried? Not a particular effective solution in my mind, but might be enough for the "season"...

3. anything else? for those who are in typing mode, I have thought about all the SYNTHETIC fibres we wear nowadays, rayon, nylon, plastic infused fabrics, etc. I have rubber mats on the floor carpet, which may be the culprit, but my goal is to solve the situation with an application of know-how and ingenuity...if that thinking escapes you, it's ok, you can still have a nice day! :)

4. perhaps there's grounding issues with the car? are some ppl more prone to shocks than others? are the synthetic materials/fabrics of the mazdaspeed3 more prone to this? please feel free to share your more logical deductions...

Leather makes a big difference. When I put leather in my Sunfire, the shocking stopped. Now I get shocked again in the 3.

I've always wondered about those static straps. Someone try it and see if they work!

Just attach it somewhere in the middle of the car so you can't see it like a tail from the back. :)

btw...everytime I get into the car, I have to conciousnessly remember I'll get shocked, flip the key open, and TOUCH it...INSERT key and still prepare for 1 to 2 minor shocks...great way to start a morning, eveery fuxking morning!

Ok...I'm heading to work now... :complain

As for those static strap things that you hang off the back of the car. They are crap! I know someone who had crazy static issues and got one of those and it didn't do a thing.

Fobio
03-25-2008, 04:01 PM
Thanks cwp...i figured those things were useless all through-out the 80's...like old wives' tales...I may go with a 3M Anti-stat Gard-type spray for now...

One more thing, the MAIN reason why I'm so keen on eliminating the static has nothing to do with the physical sensation of it...

I get static shock from everything I touch in the car, including:

1. Buttons on the stereo
2. My nav unit
3. Ignition

Just thefact that the potential of hundreds of thousands of volts (not amps! which is what kills!) coursing through my electronics can potentially hurt my wallet more in more shocking ways than one...is very discomforting...

lol

well..it's been raining/sleeting today in the city, so of course, no static discharge...I've been concerned about any build issues as well, but since there are no options for the MS3, I doubt the dealer could've fudged anything up other than the license plate install...but I can be wrong!!!

Anyway...found this...free shipping/delivery within GTA...what I save in gas, I figured is worth it...

Those ghetto static straps from the 80's are designed to get rid of the static that is built up over long trips. Wind resistance against the body will cause the buildup. It takes a while. In my dad's old honda accord, we drove down to flordia. I was in the back seat, and the C pillar would end up pulling my hair towards it like a balloon rubbed against your head! He got the strap, and it reduced the effect. He noticed the issue went away when we towed a trailer and put 2 and 2 together.

The static you're feeling is just your fabric rubbing against the cloth seat. I've heard that treating with 3M scotch gaurd helps the issue a bit. But i've yet to test it.

the WORST shock i got was coming home from blue mountian - I was wearing nylon slush pants. YOWZA! I SAW the spark (it was dark out) It actually made my arm twich on it's own.

I get shocked everytime I get out of the car.

I've tried the key trick and it doesn't do squat because the key takes a shock and then I still take a shock while closing the door.

Now instead of closing the door with my hand I push the pillar part with my jacket sleeve. My jacket gets shocked, not me.

In the summer I'll have to resort to closing the door by pushing on my rainguards.

Leather makes a big difference.

+1 I used to get shocked all the time in my Saturn.. but ever since I got my 3 (with leather) I don't think I've been shocked at all.... of course.. leather seats is a very expensive solution to static shocks :P

Drving gloves my friend! Leather driving gloves. Should be enough of an insulator to prevent your fingers from getting the shock...

You guys have to stop wearing clothes that generate static....lay off the polyester!

Anyway, this thread on the other board cleared up the scientific part of the problem:

Relative humidity is the keyword...some days are worse than others...your clothing is the main culprit...but like I said, a pimp ain't a pimp without his 'ester...

Let us know if this stuff works. I get shocks all the time from my car and my bfs - mostly in the winter because of my down-filled nylon jacket. I rarely get one in the summer. I also get them at work from my chair rolling on carpet. When I touch one of the printers I always get a shock.

Oh, I tried the tacky anti-static strip and it didn't work - so I took it off.

I found that I got shocked either:

1. wearing my work dress shoes
2. wearing ethse columbia boots I have.

when im wearing my nomral shoes (Vans / Circa skate shoes), i never get shocked.

Its quite weird.. and interesting at the same time.

I can't quite avoid getting shocked, so what I found was that when I got out of the car, I used my elbow to contact the door/metal first - it wasn't painful that way.

Fobio
03-30-2008, 07:05 PM
Just a little reminder, that as much as the shock sensation is irritating, the goal of eliminating static shock was to protect the sensitive electronics in the car.

The anti-static spray's effectiveness is still dependent on how humid/dry the weather is, it makes things a little better...also staying away from the polyester when I'm going for a ride...

I had that problem the first year I got the car, but it just disappeared after that. No more shock for me.

I have the same problem.. mostly everytime I get out of my car I get a shock (not in the winter time).. my fiancee complains about it too..

the other day I zapped my pda while sitting in my car and the screen flickered.. I was worried that I broke it.. but it seems to be working ok.. and I do have rubber mats in my car.. probably doesn't help that I'm wearing shoes though so I can't ground myself through the mat..

I wonder if there are any scientists out there that would solve this problem for us for free.. =)

Back from the dead!

Did anyone find a viable solution? I'm finding myself getting shocked almost every time i get out of the car now.. Did not use to experience this in summer. just happened this winter.

When i turn the car off and pull the door handle i get a minor shock, when i get out of the car and touch the door frame to close the door i get a bigger shock! At times i have even seen this big charge of static electricity going from me to the door lol..

What the hell! I thought it might be my led mirrors or my footwells, but i checked the wiring and its all good.
