I wasn't sure where to place this thread since it isn't really part of the sound system per se. I also couldn't find exactly what I wanted even though I know I've seen previous threads for it.
I need to deaden my trunk (badly), and possibly my rear doors as well.
What brands do you guys use? Why?
How much does it cost, and how much of it will I need?
Where do I get it?
Thanks in advance.

I used B-quiet sound deadening. They are a Canadian manufacturer, and I purchased the product from their ebay store. I used their product because they received gret reviews on canadian car audio, and were very reasonably priced. I did my trunk, front and rear doors, and the back of the license plate. Total I think I used about 25 feet.

How effective did you find the dampening when you were finished? I've got a roll to apply, waiting for the weather to get warmer.

B-Quiet was mentioned here too.
Note: Both these links are also at the bottom of this thread. Oops.

THat was a very cool article which covered most of what I wanted.
Like Baymoe, I'm curious SFW: How much difference did it make?

it made a major difference. I have almost no rattle from my sound system now. I find the sound cleaner as well, because of the eliminated rattle. As well, it helped eliminate road noise.

Out of curiosity, it says here

that you ended up getting it?

Sweet, that's exactly what I wanted to hear S.F.W. =)
I've got a roll of about 50 sq. feet of this stuff, any suggestions as to which area I should apply it to achieve the biggest effect? I think the doors only require about 15-20 feet. I drive a sedan, and eventually will be installing a sub, would applying this stuff under the rear seat be a good idea?

I would suggest doing the top of the trunk, and the rear deck first. Then doing the spare tire well. Not sure where you are located, but I live in R. Hill, and work in North York. You are welcome to check out, where I put mine.

I'm up in Orillia, so kind of far, but thanks for the offer.
Do you remember the URL for B-quiet's ebay store?

Sound Deadener Showdown
Version 2 Updated: October 19, 2005
Products Reviewed: B-Quiet Extreme and Ultimate, Brown Bread, Cascade Audio Engineering VB2, Dynamic Control Dynamat Original and Dynamat Xtreme, Elemental Designs eDead v1 and eDead v1SE, FatMat, RAAMaudio RAAMmat BXT, Second Skin Damplifier and Damplifier Pro,
Conclusions
As I have stated repeatedly, this isn't a rigorously scientific review. I got a bunch of samples and did what I could to evaluate them. While this approach is obvious lacking in a lot of ways, I think I learned some essential truths that should help in your evaluation. Additionally, since I posted the first version of this project, I have been contacted by some legitimate experts in this field, several of whom contributed important context and guidance.
Ideally, I would have loved to actually measure the effectiveness of the samples I had. How well do they dampen?. How effective are they as a barrier? These would be great things to know.
I think I have gotten to the bottom of the product failure problem. In the asphalt versus butyl debate, I am convinced that butyl based products are better in every aspect. So what do I recommend?
I would have no qualms about using SecondSkin Damplifier or Damplifier Pro, Dynamat Xtreme, RAAMmat BXT or B-Quiet Ultimate. That said, two product lines stand out - one of these will meet your requirements.
Highest Quality
Second Skin's products live up to their "Over Engineered to Over Perform" motto. They are clearly a higher quality alternative to Dynamat Xtreme - designed for greater heat tolerance, with higher quality materials.
If quality is your most important requirement, Second Skin Damplifier or Damplifier Pro are the obvious choices. Dynamat Xtreme is close, but being more expensive and not as good isn't a winning combination. I congradulate Second Skin Audio for their obvious dedication to providing the best product possible.
Best Value
RAAMaudio's RAAMmat BXT is a high quality product priced to compete with asphalt mats. If you are considering an asphalt sound deadener based on price, please reconsider.
Remember, you are not just buying square feet, you are buying mass. Most of the asphalt mats are thinner and the lighter than the butyl products. This means you will need more layers to accomplish the same result. The only close comparison is eDead v1SE vs. RAAMmat. They are close in weight and thickness, despite the fact that Elemental Designs significantly overstates the density of their products.
If I were to repeat my own installation - 300 square feet of damping mat - here's how it would price out for RAAMmat BXT and eDead v1SE, shipped:
RAAMmat BXT $594.00
eDead v1SE $513.00
There is only $81.00 between the two. If you use less, the difference will be smaller. This is not even close. Buy the RAAMmat BXT.
If you only needed 100 square feet:
RAAMmat BXT $198.00
eDead v1SE $171.00
That's just $27 dollars.
If you really need to do this in the absolutely least expensive way and are not convinced or concerned by the demonstrated inferiority of asphalt based sound deadeners, go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a roll or two of Peel & Seal. This is the least expensive option and you won't have to worry about shipping costs. I can see no difference in Peel & Seal and the asphalt based aluminum skinned products in this review. If you are going to live dangerously, do it right.
I hope this helps.

I'm thinking about getting some but am daunted by the thought of taking out all the seats and carpets, etc., etc.
So I was thinking if others are also contemplating installing sound dampeners, maybe we can help each other, eh? Anyone game for it?

Since it looks like it sells in 50' lots, and most people likely use less than that, maybe we can organize a group buy.

honestly I don't think there would be enough interest to get a group buy... unless we span this across several boards but then organizing it would be a p.i.t.a. ....

I'm up for another roll if someone gets the ball rolling on the groupbuy.

I heard roofing tar/liner works very good. You can buy a few cans at Home Depot for about $40. If you go that way, take your time b/c it could get messy.

I just ordered b-quiet from the ebay store (the URL is above somewhere). It's actually on sale for ~ 102.00 for 50 sqft. which is about half what my regular sound guy wanted.
I am going have it installed professionally though since the money is worth it to me to ensure it's done right the first time.

I've gone to the same guy: Audio Plus here in Orillia for the past 10 years.
I'm likely looking at about 400.00 to get all 4 doors, and the trunk done. I've never done sound deadening, and don't personally know anyone who has, so I don't mind spending the money to have it done for me.
I'm kind of excited now to finally get rid of all those rattles, and hear everything I've been missing.
It's almost drive in season after all.

Haven't read all the posts, but i got mine from www.edesignaudio.com (http://www.edesignaudio.com)
If you type in FORUM in the search field you will be able to get the deadening material for much cheaper.
Used eDead v1SEČ (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_24&products_id=52)for the trunk (everywhere... no joke)
Used eDead v4 - TekLite (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_24&products_id=55)on the doors (all 4) and under hood (it's heat resistant)
Then used some more eDead v1SEČ (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_24&products_id=52)on top of the eDead v4 - TekLite (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_24&products_id=55)in the doors :). Overkill? maybe... but got it a really good price and said "why not".
If you REALLY want to deaden the hell out of, gut the trunk, use some eDead v3 Gallon - Blue (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_24&products_id=54), then put the eDead v1SEČ (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_24&products_id=52) on top of that.

You'll be more than okay with the B-Quiet, but $400 to install it? ....way way way too much!!....its not rocket science to put that stuff in so you don't need a "professional install" and it takes very little time also.

Great prices with the discount but shipping kills it especially if you go with UPS who will slap you with a brokerage fee so outrageous that you will cry like a girl for days on end! The ebay link provided above for B-Quiet works out a bit more expensive but that's without taking into account what charges UPS will charge for brokerage and taxes (13%) for eDead whereas Ebay Bquiet will charge a lower shipping charge and only 5% GST...

When I got the initial quote, it was based on his experience with other brands.
To get 4 doors, and trunk done took 3 hours, and cost 200.00 after tax.
Better yet, it's a HUGE difference in sound quality over what it was before I got it done yesterday.
I'm happy.
EDIT: Total price for 50' of b-quiet including tax and shipping: 135.00
