View Full Version : Changing from big sub box to smaller one.

I'm considering putting my 12inch sub into a smaller box, just wondering how that would affect the sound. Right now I have a Bassworx ported sub similar to the one below.

I'm looking to get the smallest possible box probably just a Sealed box that fits a 12inch. I've also looked at some DIY boxes, anyone tried before?

Thanks.

I'd expect the change to be quite significant. First off, you will notice that the sub is not as efficient as it was (sealed enclosures require more power). The overall output will also reduce. I went from a ported to a sealed about three years ago and there was no comparison to output, but I wasn't after SPL but rather sound quality, and a sealed box can be very musical/tight.

I would suggest sterring clear of generic boxes, especially sealed ones as they don't tend to do the subwoofer any justice. You can have a custom sealed box made for about $125, and that's well worth the money IMO.

The thing is the box I have right now takes up way too much space I always have to take it out. The bass it produces is absolutely ridiculous when I turn the knob to +18db.
So I was thinking of going to a ported which should only take up a small corner.

Typically ported boxes require more space than sealed. Either way, best bet is to visit a shop that will custom design a box to meet the specs of the sub, and your size requirements.

Where could I go to do a custom box ? Our sponsors?

Where are you located?

You could move to a smaller ported box, but if space is a serious concern then I'd definately suggest going sealed. A 12" driver in a sealed enclosure can still pound, you just have to have a good amp with ample clean power.

I'm in markham.

My amp is the Rockford P325.1
2 OHM Output Power - Full Range 325 Watts
4 OHM Output Power - Full Range 175W
Signal to Noise Ratio 80dB
Total max power 975W

I think a lot of places could build a box for you. There is software out there called Bass Works pro, that can help you calculate the dimensions of the sub box you want/need to get the sound results you are looking to achieve.
I would suggest contacting Audio Heaven(they are close to you), and Chase Custom Car Audio(they built a box for The Professor).

Check out the JL site for the JL ProWedge 10Wv6, its the set-up I have, just take the dimensions for that box, it should work fine. Its a nice box with an angled back so it fits snug placed against the back seat and its quite small.

Just a suggestion!

If you're happy with everything about your existing box except the size, why not try the Bassworks 12" sealed box from BB?

Ya, that's what I'm thinking. I wonder if our sponsors would have something simliar for cheaper though.

You'll never know unless you ask them!

If not, $87 isn't that bad, and you might even be able to return it if you don't like it. Generally BB has a great return policy, but I'd have to assume that you'll be putting holes into the box to mount the driver which may complicate things.

best thing to do is to find out what the specs are for that sub and the box size that is required for the sub's output.. will make a huge difference in the sound quality that the sub produces.

Thise is what I found on the website : http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/CAR/Boxes%20and%20Parameters/GTO_1202D.pdf

But I do not have a clue what they're talking about. I beleive I am using a Vented Box right now.

From What I'm understanding the smallest box I could get is Volume = 1ft cubed.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I found that the sealed bassworx box from BB reduces the quality. I think it if had a little bit more volume it would be perfect. I find it hits a little flat compared to my previous box. My 12" sub requires min 1 cu ft of space as a min and I think the box is a little less.

What are you using? Are you using sealed right now?

That's the one I'm planning to get, how's the sound? WHat kind of sub do you have?

It does the job. I think it would sound better if I was running an aftermarket deck.

It's fairly old but does what I need. This is it http://www.pioneerusa.com/PUSA/Support/CarAudioVideo/Subwoofers/Champion-Pro/ci.TS-W1240C.Support

My suggestion would be to go to a shop and have them build you one according to your size restrictions and volume requirements. They will figure it out and do it for you. Get it done right the first time instead of changing boxes all the time and wasting money. Go to Sidds Radio, they will build it right.
