View Full Version : New Canon release
So I just got a 40D and they go and release the replacement to the 5D - the 4D! I wouldn't have considered it, but with the expected Canon rebate, it will be a sweet deal! Maybe I'll sell the 40D and go full frame after all.

btw E39.. how do you like the 40D so far?
I'm itching to upgrade from my Rebel XT, and have been debating the 40D or making the switch to Nikon, the D80 in particular

April fools.
But on a more serious note:
A replacement for the 5D has been rumored for a loooong time now and rightfully so since it's about time (based on how frequently Canon usually replaces a body).
I would say if you can 1) wait, 2) spend the cash, 3) really want FF, 4) really want the IQ the current 5D is known for then wait for it. If you want a new camera now, just get the 40D or current 5D (which is still a great camera).
Also note that when Canon offers a rebate, Henry's and Downtown Camera usually raises their prices. So just keep an eye on the price and don't get fooled.

Not sure what kind of gear you currently have for Nikon but have you considered the D300? It's a great camera. Maybe even better than 40D.
^ I have considered the D300.. but it's just a little but outta my price range I think.
I don't have any Nikon gear right now.. but I haven't invested too much money in Canon gear either. Basically only 1 lens, a remote, and some CF cards.
so thats one reason I'm thinking that I can still make the switch the Nikon without losing out too much on my Canon equip. and try to sell my XT.
it's either that.. or I go with the Canon, and keep the XT as a back-up, and something I can still use lenses on both if needed.
Hehe, got caught in an April fools joke eh E39 :p
He loves his 40D and I'm loving his old Rebel, lol. Its just a shame he doesn't get out to take more pictures!!!

If I am not mistaken Nikons use SD cards, so your CF cards will be useless. Canon is releasing the XSI, to replace the XTI, it's a decent camera, and is relatively cheap. Best buy and Future Shop gives you a 14 day trial period with the camera, so you can use and compare any cameras before you decide to keep it.

I realize that the Nikon uses different memory cards.. one more factor hindering my ultimate decision
Not that interested in the XSi, it would be an upgrade from my XT, but I'm really looking for at least a Prosumer level camera. I make a bit of money taking photos, and really need to make the move to something a bit more professional.

I always ask - why do you want to upgrade? The XT is an excellent camera. Unless you have a major issue with the body, don't jump into a new one. You're better off spending $ on good glass. Eventually you'll outgrow the body and will want something more powerful and then you'll have the lenses to suit it too.
I love the 40D. I upgraded from the old Digital Rebel (300D). The Rebel is a great camera and although I was tempted for years to upgrade, I bought quality glass instead. I upgraded to the 40D primarily for the speed (startup, fps) because I like to shoot sports. I prefer the feel of it over the new rebel cameras. I'd rather have a 30D than any of the Rebel series now.
The D300 is a great camera - arguably better than the 40D. If you're budget is in the D80 range, consider getting the new Canon Rebel XSI. The XSI is superior to the D80.
Remember you've got to look at the long run - you're not just buying a camera, you're buying the system. Look at what lenses are in your future and how much they cost as well as the reputation. For me, it's Canon all the way.
Looking at E39's collection, he's totally sold me. The lenses are what make the differance in my humble opinion. Quality lenses make such the differance on the shots. Build up the lens collection, then upgrade.
I'm content with the 300D because I don't need a fast FPS I like to shoot stills, mainly just cars. My money will eventually be going to a 10-20mm lens. Its what suits my preferance. So in that respect, ask, what suits your preferance b3GS?

Yup.. glass is most important. I got my XT just over two years ago, since then I've done a few weddings and shoots. With the help of some decent borrowed glass (Canon24-70L and Sigma 14mm, both at F2.8). There's lots of nice glass out there it's hard to choose what you like and what is right for you(budget and needs). I personally like Xerox's setup, but it's out of my current price range.
btw. my sigma 28-70 F2.8 may be up for sale in the next week or two.
Speaking of weddings, I've been booked for my first (2009 so lots of time to prepare). I've got an engagement session with them at the end of April so I'm getting a little nervous. I've been reviewing and practicing my fill flash technique and studying poses. I'm not worried about the technical aspects... more about interacting with them. I think that's the hardest part of photographing people... making them feel comfortable and looking natural.
That's why I prefer to shoot the cars - maybe I should get David to lend me his car and they can just pose around it!

The Sigma 10-20 is a beauty. You'll love it David (I know this has been discussed before).
Has anyone here had any luck selling there Mazda/Auto images? I've talked to people in the US that have sold to tuner mags, but nobody in Canada yet. Is there a market for quality Mazda photos? Maybe Mazda Canada, dealers, or magazines?

well while during or after the engagement session, you may need to do some serious talking with the bride and groom. Caus I got the church minister quite pissed while shooting in his church. I did do as he and I agreed with the boundaries of the church and to where i was and was not allowed to be. The bride and groom also made a request about not worrying about the guests sight lines so i can get the best shots.
Engagement shots are much more fun than the wedding ones. Just about any location is good. It's like being with friends, be socialble, it brings out a more natural smile.

Hmmmmm. Maybe we should all have a few drinks beforehand!

I hear that - been sitting on my 40D too waiting for better weather.
I'm going to Japan come end of this month so I'll get some use there.

thats just it.. I feel I've outgrown the body of the Rebel series. It's nice and light for carrying around.. but when shooting anything serious such as weddings, engagements, events, etc. it just doesn't feel professional. It feels more like a toy. lol.
Also.. it's very hard to not want the new ''dust reduction' technology and latest technology in sensors.
Whichever camera I go for.. I'm also going to make sure I get a decent glass to go with it right off the bat. definately a lens with IS.
But I'm also itching to get the 10-22mm lens as well.. love the wide angle shots

b3GS.. do you have the battery grip? it'll definitely help with feel.

no but I know what you mean.. I borrowed a D100 with a grip on it once.. and it felt very nice
I might stick with the Rebel a bit longer. and pickk up a grip and maybe some better glass
This is kind of like cars.
The rebel can compare to a Mazda3, a subcompact little starter. That does all things well but none of them great. Of course you can start buying better parts, exhaust, springs wheel which is essentially the same as buying better glass or accessories for the body.
In the end though, the better car is still the Ferrai, a 5D. But if you bought good parts for your Mazda3 you can maybe use them to better your Ferrari. Ok its a poor refrence but you get the idea! :D

Look for a used grip.. no use spending more than you need on it since it won't fit a 30D or 40D. I have a grip on my XT, if i have my camera with me, test it out.
Better glass is a definite, but may need to decide whether you want to go full frame or stay cropped. The lens you actually buy may depend on that.

If you get the vertical/battery grip, I highly suggest getting a Canon E1 strap. I've got it on my 30D+BG-E2 and love it, especially when I have a heavy lens mounted. It's overpriced if you buy it local though. Luckily I a have friend that frequents HK. :)

b3GS - York's question/comment is a good one - I had the same issue with my 300D Rebel - felt small - I got the grip and it does help in getting a better hold of the camera. That would probably apply for the XT too as seeing it's smaller than the 300D
Odds are you'll probably find (for sure I'd suspect) on Ebay and maybe even Henry's trying to get rid of 'old' stock.

JMAK - doesn't the 300D and the 350D use different grips?
b3GS - You may be able to find one on FM forums, RFD and other camera forums too.

Yep:
300D BG-E1
350D BG-E3
The 350D body is (if I remember correctly) 10% smaller (or something like that) than the 300D.
It would appear that I thought b3GS has the 300D - it's the 350D - thanks for catching that York
thanks guys for the suggestion.. I have been thinking of buying a grip for a while now for the XT (350D)
I guess I'm hesitating now, just cause I'm thinking of upgrading, and don't know if I want to spend any more money on stuff for the Rebel.
But maybe a grip and a better lens will satisfy me for a bit longer :chuckle
is anyone think about go to states for the gears? i got 1dm3 last fall from B&H when the new verson issued and save around $1500 compare to henrys or adam cam. i will get a new 5D replacement (3D??) when they come out, anyone wanna go?
