Nice fishies man.
I wanted to get a salt water tank but no room to put it in. I'll wait until I get a place of my own and then think about it. LOL.
I have a small fresh water tank where I had 6 afican cichlids. Went on vacation so I left my fishies with my gf. Came back after vacation and only had 2 cichlids left. LOL.

I had a full blown reef with tangs, softies, SPS coral, clams, the works. Lost it all in the huge power failure that hit the east coast. I have a planted aquarium at my parent's place. It was doing swell when I was around... but unfortunately it's pretty dismal since I'm not around to take of it. Good news is that the sterbai cory's are multiplying (really cool). I'd like to re-start the hobby once I get married and have kids. haha..

Salt water tanks vs Freshwater tanks. What are the advantages or disadvantages to each. My wife wants an aquarium.
WLS ZMZM

From what I've seen.. much easier to take care of a freshwater tank... maybe Fobio can explain the saltwater tank.
Fish also tend to be cheaper when they are freshwater fish, salt water fish are more expensive.
Just depends on the amount of work you want to put into it I guess and depends on the fish you want.... freshwater fish also tend to be smaller then saltwater fish.....
my goal is to get a large tank and just get an army of Cardinal tetra's say like 100 or so... muhahahaha

Cardinal Tetras?
*Snickers at the name*
WLS ZMZM
04-04-2008, 01:25 PM
hahah yeah... they look like neon tetra's are a little bigger but the main reason is cuz they are resistant to the tetra disease... basically the fish gets sick and its nice blue/orange colour turns it white and the muscles in their body get hard so they can't move properly highly contagious between all tetra species with the exception of the Cardinal tetra.... but that would be fitting no??

:chuckle hahaha.... the only issue with those little guys is they are hard to get acclimatized to a tank.... they have a habit of dying in new environments
but they are really cool... they follow your finger around when you touch the tank so you'd have to imagine a nice school of them moving together looks realyl cool like a blue/orange flash

Saltwater fish tends to be more colorful from what I've seen so far but like WLS ZMZM said, they are more expensive. Plus saltwater tanks needs more care from what I've been told. Balance this and balance that or see your corals turn white.

I need to hit a good store for some research and first hand info. You guys know of any place that you would recommend in Toronto/Markham/Holly-Woodbridge/Richmond Hill area?

04-04-2008, 01:51 PM
Truthfully speaking... there are alot of great shops for different things... I find that Big Al's Aquarium is one of the best to deal with for learning and researching There is a store on Steeles w/Yonge in the Swiss Chalet Plaza. They have a points card where you can earn points which can be redeemed at the store. I find for supplies Pet Smart is much cheaper plus their fish come with a 14 day warranty, where if it dies you can bring it back and either get a new one or a refund. Price wise though Wal-mart yes Wal-mart is cheap for fish haven't had any issues with the fish I bought there, but there staff isn't very knowledgeable

to start a tank you're gonna want some good hearty fish that are easy to take care of, Cory Cat's are great fish and there are tons of varieties and they are bottom feeders so really easy to care for otherwise I'd recommend Danio's great starter fish and they were the first ones my gf bought for me when she bought me my tank over a year ago.

What did you feed the Oscar Fish?
lol...everything...it was my first fish, so I played with it a lot...but it would never jump out of the water which is good as I could leave the tank uncovered...my current oscar that my nephew keeps jumps for anything...
Usually dryed pellets and fish food...but when I had Oscar the Oscar the First...RIP...I would drop him bits of seafood I'd have for dinner...bits of shrimp, scallops...fish belly from chinese soups...he loved it!
Now...I just feed my marine fish pellets and flakes and some frozens clams I buy from Chinese supermarkets for CHEAP! I have enough clams to feed my tanks JUST CLAMS for 1 year for about $5...once you have your marine tank setup, I've found it to be just as simple to maintain as the freshwater...just different parameters...
One thing I learned about corals...they're an addiction...try it if you must, but if you want some $ left over for your car, get over corals quick time!...lol...
Chk out these zoos I have had since I got into corals...hardy as fuxk...and will multiply on their own...so good coral to start with...

Fobio is right though.. with a freshwater tank or a saltwater tank... if you get into it becomes like an addiction... and you'll end up spending alot of money... as you learn more you buy more... when I first started I had the tank a few fish and food.... then it started with the air pumps and upgraded filters and new plants, new fish... ph kits and water hardness kits and different chemicals to help the tank etc etc

So you like underwater flowers.
To a certain extent...keeping corals is underwater garden keeping...or aquascaping...and there's a certain art to it...for a awhile, I had a perfect balance of corals and fish that the tank was self-maintained...all I had to do was to add FRESH water to my saltwater tank to replenish evaporation...and of course water-soluable nutrients to feed the corals...so once you reach equilibrium, it becomes self-sustaining to a certain extent...makes you feel quite god-like...
Liken it to ppl who have a thing for orchids...completely escapes me, esp when ppl pay $20K for A flower...

i been thinking to get aquarium for a while now, still havent got it!
My advise, if you love modding your car is DON'T!...hehehe...but if you must...chk out www.pricenetwork.ca
When I first started, I picked up 90% of my parts used (tanks, filters, pumps, lights...) and I even started building my own "gutto" (ghetto + gutters = gutto) lights with CFL bulbs and rain gutters...I enjoy shit like that...hehehe...esp picking up bargains...
Than as I progressed, I resold my used items to members on pricenetwork...so instead of it being a complete drain on my finances like most hobbies, it also became self-sustaining thru my initial investment...and then I got into breeding and reselling, so as a whole the hobby isn't so bad as long as you're smart about it...
Big Al's loves it when a guy walks in and says he wants to buy 2 Nemo's for their niece/gf...lol...you go in thinking you're gonna spend $50...maybe $100...then you leave with a 6' tank and lights and a $3000 bill...

Right! then you move to another part of the city and you find out you can only use them back out in Pickering...hehehe...
Anyway...nothing against BA...esp during their BOXING DAY SALE!!! I know it's like 8 months away...but most fish-nuts I know have a running list they keep for stuff, even livestock on Boxing Day...well worth it esp after you drop the gf/wife off shopping...
^ I also meant to say that I like the oscar! :)
Thanks...I liked him lots too...oscar fish and trigger fish are the closest thing to a dog you can get underwater...they beg for food and can get pissed off...lol...

Here are my past tanks and fish...I only have a 65g now with some Bangwe Yellow Frontosas.
Fobio I noticed you have some Frontosas also have you tried Dainichi pellets? Great Stuff....Better than New life Spectra IMO
http://www.arofanatics.com/members/azn_arowana_boy/
I am a fish freak as well.....prob my 1st love even before the mazda3.
BA isn't my 1st choice when it comes to buying fish, most of there stock is no good after a few days within arrival.
I only go there when I need to get a tank for something...as they sell the "Miracles" brand tanks, top notch IMO. If you every want custom tanks North American Fish Breeders is pretty good.
For fish I usually goto Market Village @ Kennedy/Steeles or Aquapets @ Midland/Steeles. I know both owners and I get great prices.
If you want live fishfood for your fish you can't beat anywhere Marketvillage locally. The fattest superworms and crickets in town not to mention the cheapest prices. They also have bloodworms from Taiwan and the Hikari bloodworms from Japan.

Damn. Any other good stores in the north west end? In Brampton more specifically? The only good store here is Big Al's.
I remembered before when I had little money. I just grabbed one of my brother's old aquariums, patched it up since the bottom was cracked and made my own ghetto cover with lights. Also made different ghetto filtration kits out of PVC pipes. Those were the good old days.
Now, all my time goes to my new dog. Because of this thread, I'm now starting to get interest again in setting up my tank though small it maybe.

Salt water tanks vs Freshwater tanks. What are the advantages or disadvantages to each. My wife wants an aquarium.
Bottom line: freshwater easier to take care of + cheaper than salt.
Another thing to consider: the larger the tank the easier to maintain (larger water volume means toxic by-products reach critical levels more slowly)

Dude...I never met you (might've saw you at Lucky's before tho), but I've met your friend Ken...the Japanese guy...sold him my frontosa colony along with a big wild caught male...and also a couple of nice parrots too...send him my regards!
So fish, M3/MS3, Coolnavi...I'm sure there's at least one more thing we both enjoy!

Actually...I know this has been suggested, but if you are starting and want some relatively easy to keep fish fresh water would be easier...and also, a tank full of neon tetras (cardinals are cool too but not as shimmery/shiny) is very mesmerizing for the lady(ies) and soothing for yourself...+1
...great food for an oscar too if you decided to play the malevolent fish keeper...lol...

hahah thats terrible feeding tetras to an oscar !! Really they told you its only valid in pickering?? that sounds like BS to me.... as far as I know the cards are valid at any of their stores...... at least thats what the cute girl at the Big Al's on steeles told me...
