After I turned my 3 off a couple of days ago after about 30 seconds I heard a noise that sounded like a motor or compressor of some sort. I got out of the car to try and locate the noise and it was coming from the rear passenger side wheels well, which is obviously under the fuel door. After about a minute, the nose stopped and ended with a Pfft sond and a pop.

Since I first noticed the noise, it has happened after every exteded drive I take. If I just turn the car on, let it run for a while and shut it down, it doesn't happen. I have also noticed the same thing coming from the engine compartment, including the pfft sound but not nearly loud enough to hear from inside the car.

I was thinking it might be something to do with the fuel system because of it's vacinity, but that is just a guess.

The reason I am concerned is because this is my second Mazda 3, so I've had one for a few years, and I've never heard this before, and I usually notice these things?

Any ideas?

I was going to say the power steering pump makes this noise but it's on the passenger side front, in the engine bay.

I was gonna say I hear a strange sound from the passenger seat all the time.. I call her my girlfriend... I tend to block her out when I'm driving.

Its probably just the fuel system returning fuel to the tank and releasing back-pressure, common I would think after a long drive.

Mine does the exact same "procedure" and I got used to it or I consider it normal.
As a test turn the key to on position then with door open, turn back to normal position. See if it does it...
