i'll be getting one in may.
i don't think they are "ready to be used as a substitute for passports
they have the smart chip technology so that when the infrastructure is ready the cards will be ready.. but i don't think it is officially legit yet...
i'm sure someone else here can clarify

Got it back in february. The government hasn't allowed the law to pass as they're still talking to the U.S about it. It's got some pretty nifty features.

I saw my friend's new license when she visited from Ottawa. It may have some new security features but they sure cheaped out on the ink! It's a pale blue and the photo is black & white.
I miss the old purple Trillium layout.

The enhanced driver's licence will not be available until later this year. The details are still being figured out, but suffice it to say, it won't be free and it won't be sent to you as quickly as the DL card. I personally think it's a bad idea.

Yeah I saw my friends and at first glance it looked like he ran the old one through the wash a couple of times:chuckle They definitely cheaped out on the colour. The embossed signature is pretty cool though...some nice features despite the lack of colour.

I don't understand. I've had the new driver's license since Nov of 2007. The process of renewing was the same. Are we talking about two different things here?

+1. I don't have one yet but I have a few friends with them. I think I may have even seen a new health card as well.

Essentially, yes. There will be a new DL card, which is what is out now and an enhanced DL card which will let you cross the border. The enhanced DL card will include legal status information and will comply with the standards set out in the US Real ID Act. I can't say anything more since the entire process is still in the planning stages.

It nice features, but it looks too much like Alberta's current DL.

If you mean the green one with a photo thats been around for a while. I'm still using my old red and white one though. Its in two pieces, but tape works great.

lol...no I have had one of those green ones forever. I accidentaly peeled off the back of my white and red OHIP card and it said void. The laminate was coming off anyway.
I just could have swore I saw a different OHIP card floating around. Maybe not.

:chuckleThat's exactly like mine, I need to take a day off work and get the new one, I worry that I'm going to go to the doctors and end up losing half my card somewhere.

Nah, the new ones expiry. Until I'm told my red and white one is no longer valid I'm keeping it.
I see all sorts of IDs at the bank all the time. The new ones are quite cool if you ask me, and not easily to copy which is a good thing. If you hold the new ones under a black light they will glow the trillium on the back in red and the ontario symbol red on the front. The old ones only do a blue ontario symbol on the front.

There is a new OHIP card, too. Pale, washed out green similar to the driver's license. (I work in a hospital so I've seen them for the last couple of months).
I still have my old red & white OHIP card, too. I'm not giving it up until they make me. You have to renew the new ones periodically.
