I don't know much about sub boxes, but is there any preferred places to get them or just stick with the ones from Futureshop/Best Buy whom I hear are quite decent.

They look good enough, but they have huge markups :/

Is it also true that ported boxes sound better for low bass (like hip hop) and enclosed sound better for rock?

as far as i know, a sealed box is better for sound quality, and a ported box is better for bass.

so if you want everyone in a 100 foot radius to hear tupac, then get a ported box.

as for boxes, i have a bassworks box (i think), and its fine.

I recently replaced the sealed box that I bought from a car audio store with one I bought from Best Buy (Bassworx) because I wanted a smaller box. The MDF used in the Bassworx box was thinner and thus the box was lighter than my previous one. In terms of sound quality, it was fine to my ears, even though there is less internal volume in the Bassworx.

So still with Bassworx...

Now just have to get it for less. I think they mark those boxes up 2-3x.

or you can make your own....

just look up the specs on your subs. i believe there is a certain amount of cubic feet of air the enclosure should be.

What are the internal volume requirement for the specific sub you have?

If it's 1 cubic feet, (square shape for the box), i can email you the measurments, go to home depot, buy half sheet of 3/4 inch MDF and have them cut the pieces. Buy a box of wood screws, 2 cans of speckle spray paint for finishing and put it all together. Total cost? 35 to 50 dollars and i guarantee you that box would be A LOT stronger than any prefab box from best-buy.

If the box resonates (vibrates a lot) due to the 1/2 inch MDF that is normally used in those prefab boxes, it could rob a lot of the sound the sub produces.

OR, you could just say screw it and buy the prefab ;)

I ended up 'screwing it' and bought one from East Hamilton Radio.
