So, washed my car today and guess what? hahaha, stupid little rust from a stone chip. Also, i see numerous stone chips on the passenger side. like WTH. what cheap paint.
Anyways, i've decided im going to sand that tiny spot with fine sand paper and spray wd 40 to clean it then apply some touch up paint.
Good idea or no?
Well im gonna go do it anyways lol. But feedback would be good

WD-40 won't clean it. You need to clean it with rubbing alcohol.
It's a good idea to stop the rust now before it gets out of hand.

well i didnt do it lol. Stupid touch up paint looks so ugly. Luckily i did it on a small spot on the back first and applied it with a skewer stick.
But i thought wd40 stop corrosion no? And is hydrogen peroxide rubbing alcohol? it doesnt dry that quick and doesnt feel cool when i blow at it on my hand.

Hydrogen peroxide is not rubbing alcohol.
Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol.

If you put WD-40 on the area, you'll never get the paint to hold. WD-40 is actually a very poor choice for rust protection on a car. It's far too liquid and would disappear quickly.

I found the same thing while washing my car after the winter. There were little rust looking spots on the lower part of the rear doors. Car is less than 1 year old. It looks like it is caked on the paint and not a chip.. Where does this come from?

well it will remove those rust looking dots on the car. The only problem I have with is that i gota keep rubbing it back and forth. After about 50 times, it should have went away. (maybe this is how clay bars suppose to work)
Not trying to sound stupid here, but what is Clay bar???

I get a lot of rail dust on my white Mazda3....and unforunately have been told it will just keeping coming back....more on the bottom half and trunk portion. Way too much to clay bar as its all over. I took my car to the dealer last year with this problem and got it detailed. They used a solvent (??) of some sort to take it off.....mostly of it was gone but nothing to prevent it. Told me I should stay on top of it so that the rust spots don't increase and work its way down through the paint.

Yeah, I washed my car the other day and notice a couple of those rust specs near the bottom of the passenger door too. WTF? I've only had it for not even more than 1 month!
Is this a common occurrence on ALL new cars nowadays or only Mazdas?

These rust specs are more than likely metal particles sitting in the clearcoat starting to rust. A simple claybar treatment and polish will remedy this.

I think for this situation, a real clay bar would be better than the turtle wax liquid stuff.

I have 06 Nissan Murano, and the hatch or trunk door is full of those little rusty spots.

If you did, the spot should dissolve in the clear coat.. Making the entire clear coat somewhat orange. I've done that on my other car. (mentioned above) But it rubbed off when I kind of scratched it with my nail.
Does this affect Metallic paint or only non metallic?

Update...
I used a clay bar on my car today to remove these little dots. It was a total pain in the ass as I am a perfectionist and I had to remove every dot!! I'm definitely not doing this again for a while...lol, but it looks 100 times better!
Here are some pics of the before and after...

The yellow dots are rust?
I had some TINY yellow dots, but I've never assumed that they were "rust"... always thought it was just road tar.

Yup, this needs to be done about twice a year. Call it rail dust.. brake dust (from your car and other cars in front of you), metal bits of whatever.. plows plowing and slowly shaving down their plows etc. They're just contaminents in the paint that need to be removed. :D
eshine.ca sells some very good clay bar. Stay away from the stuff at Canadian Tire. The Ricardo clay is VERY easy on your new like paint and will remove marks like that easily. Make sure to pick up some clay bar lube, too, as you'll need it. Also, make sure to not put pressure on the clay bar as you don't want to gouge the paint, not that clay would really. Look at the clay every minute or so, or often after covering a heavily affected area, that way you can see if there is a lot of sediment in the clay, if there is, mead it with your fingers until it disappears and start continue. If one mark is really stubborn to get off, use your finger nail, it won't hurt the paint whatsoever. If anything, it'll hurt your finger :P

I just did my car 2 days ago and I also had Rail Dust. It is a common occurance on all cars, not just Mazda3. If your car has rust specs embedded in the paint, it is because your car was freightered on a train. Dust from the rails float in the air and then stick to your paint.
Many car detailing enthusiasts recommend clay barring a brand new car so as to get rid of the dust specs before they rust.
I never had a clay bar or the time until recently and it works very well. Not only did it get rid of the rust specs, it picks up tar spots, embedded sand, insect guts and anything else you can imagine that will get stuck in your paint.
The advice in EvilDeadFan's post is quite accurate.
- Keep the clay lubricated. I didn't have the clay lube, I forgot it at home and I used soapy water. Work just as well, just keep spreading the lubricant over the paint often.
- Make sure you're working with a peice of clay that's flat and the surface area is about the size of your palm. This ensures that you have good control over the clay.
- Inspect your clay often. It was mentioned inspect every minute. I inspected every 5 seconds, literally. As soon as you feel the clay pick something up, look for contaminants and reknead your clay.
- Anytime you feel resistance, this is good but also add extra lubricant just to be safe. The last thing you want is to pick contaminants up and rub them back into the paint (not that easy to do though).
- Keep even pressure on the clay, dont' force it into the paint. Just glide it over.
It's actually a very easy process to do and doesnt' require very much knowledge in the paint correction area. Not only can you feel the clay working, you can hear it too. Use those two indicators to help you when you're claying.
Don't forget to wax. I didn't because I ran out of time, and I feel like I my car is naked. =O
Sorry, dont' have pictures right now, but hopefully will take some later on.
