Well I was driving to my buddies mechanic to drop off his car, went arount an offramp turn on the highway and started to hear a tick tick tick tick from the engine bay. When I would accelerate past 3000 rpm you could hear this horrible noise. I got to my buddies mechanic and he diagnosed it as a spun bearing, but was perplexed since I still had 2.5L of oil (low but nowhere near bone dry). A spun bearing in the motor is usually due to oil starvation. Anywho I went to Dave Wood Mazda and Cecily took care of my worries and troubles. New Engine covered under warrenty. I had 67XXX kms on the car at the time. I also replaced and upgraded the clutch since the motor was out, and flywheel. Care runs super nice now, (still breaking it in) and I'm glad for a warrenty for the first time since the engine alone comes in at about 8k. Still don't have an answer to as why the bearing went, but when they opened up the motor they found the oil to be dirty and have metal shavings in it. I had my last oil change done at Gyro Mazda, (Never Again) and the thing that that got me was that the original engine had burned so much oil. I'm used to oil burning from my H23 Prelude Motor when I had this, but a 3 year old Mazda 3? (I'm also not sure of how much oil they put in at Gyro Mazda...or if they did at all) Anyways, car is on the road now, and I'm babying it for now as I really want to make sure the engine gets the proper break in. Hope none of you have to run into this problem after the warrenty is done as I was not going to be happy to dish out 8k to replace the motor.

On one hand it sux, but on the other you got a new engine :) Chances are that the engine may have been oil starved at some point and finally gave up just now. I do my oil changes as I don't trust any service to do it for me. As a student, I used to work at a quick lube place and some guys there (master mechanics too!) did f-up quite a few times with low fill, wrong filters, insufficient torque, etc...

All the oil changes were done on time...most early..5k...and at a Mazda Dealership. So I doubt it got starved, but who knows.

metal shavings... wow. Gyro ftw! lol
I'm happy for you in this case because you got a new engine =)
Welcome to the new engine club!
only 2.5L of oil =o
wow man. either you were really burning oil, or gyro screwed up.

I'm going with the second option as there didn't seem to be a problem with burning oil at all.

i had the same issue, but mine wasnt under warranty. I was pushin 5k miles on Mobil1 synthetic and knock knock knock....spun rod bearing. I found a used motor that had 3500 miles on it and paid $2600 for R&R. There's something weird about these engines. They shouldnt be burning oil this easy. I put 4 1/2 qts. of oil in my engine everytime i change it. it sux. now, new motor, existing components, and i'm having a misfire problem with the #1 cylinder....any ideas? i've already replaced the plugs

Should have taken my car to them when I needed a new engine recently. Sounds like you actually got good service.

If these cars are known for eating oil, why do they say to change it @ 8000?
(seems long even for an engine that does not burn oil)
all my other jap/german cars have been 5000/6000 recomended.
And with that being said it does not matter if it is synthetic (last a little longer) or conventional its still a long time IMO.
The subaru had a magnatized oil plug (I hope these do) you could always see what came out of your engine and lucky on my car only the first change showed metal ;)
Same with the trany plug you could see how your gears were doing by reading the stuff that comes out/sticks to the plug.
To the OP I just started a new "break in period" thread in the engine and drive train forums. Im not sure what im going to do yet, I see that you are breakin in yours, what guildlines are you folowing and on whos advice?
