We've got screens in our elevators here at work that display news tidbits and other stuff.
I can't find an online link to a story or anything, but it just popped up there that a cop was charged under the street racing law for going too fast in his cruiser.
That just has me tickled pink. Everyone in the elevator started chuckling.
Can't wait for the story to get to the wider press. :chuckle :bana

That's a great story. I heard that a garbage truck also got charged a few weeks ago. Doing something like 120 in a 60....

Payback is sweet.

"As the Ontario Provincial Police scan the province's highways from the sky and the ground looking for dangerous and aggressive drivers there's word one of their own is facing charges under the new street racing law.
A 43-year-old Peterborough County OPP constable was allegedly clocked driving at least 50 kilometres over the sped limit on Highway 115, just south of Peterborough, on March 25 according to a published report. The officer was in his cruiser at the time. Under the street racing law, which went into effect last September, a driver caught speeding 50 km/hr or more above the posted limit can have their licence and vehicle seized immediately. The maximum fine for the crime was also bumped up to $10,000.
On Tuesday police organizations from across the province gathered in Markham to kick off Project Erase (http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_22673.aspx)(Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere). Authorities say 42 people have been killed by speeders in the GTA since 1999. Since the street racing law went into effect, more than 4,500 charges have been laid.
The officer charged in March has been moved to desk duty at his detachment and is scheduled to appear in court in June.
Lloyd Tapp is facing two charges under the street racing law."
so, did they tow his cruiser away? lol.....
i think thats more for show.

I'm not gonna get my hopes up. That's sooooo gonna get thrown out. :S
If anything, the cop that gave him the ticket is gonna get it worse in the end from other cops.

Is he going to go to court to fight it? Maybe the cop that ticketed him won't show up.

Yeah i saw that on the screen @ my work Too..... i always thought that this law didnt apply to cops... he will probably state that he had an urgent matter to attend to being a cop and all imagine how awkward that pullover would have been a cop pulling over a cop hahahaha

Isn't that how this law works though? No judgement on the part of the officer. You're 50 over, you get the book thrown at you no matter what? :bana
Just imagine how akward it would of been?
Sir, Do you know how fast you were going? Liscense and Registration Please.

It's how the law *should* work. All bets are off when it comes to cops - off duty or not. Most of the force will back their "brothers" up regardless because they all know they'll need to be backed up one time or another. It's not right that's for sure but from that I know, I won't be surprised at all if the ticket gets dropped or if he gets a slap on the wrist.
The way I interpret Desk Job is, "Sit here until this blows over. You'll still get paid and once it dies down, you'll get your job back."

Pfft. Nothing will happen. Media coverage will subside after a day or two max, and the guy will be out terrorizing the streets again.

that sad truth is that car should have been towed to the impound yard and I bet it wasn't! Just shows how this law sucks! Im not for speeding or street raceing but I do hate that law and think its so bias. Just another way for the greedy government to get some more money and waste it!

Yeah. I remember reading about someone driving his bosses Aston Martin and having it impounded for a week. Why should the cop car be any different?

Because like any other profession/industry, colleagues stick up for one-another, and have hidden perks - much like free popcorn when your buddy works at the concession stand at the movies :P

Not necessarily true. I knew a girl in college who worked at a "Gentlemen's Club." I got nothing.

He'd probably have been OK if he'd only moved one lane to the left as he blew past his Sgt. who was ticketing another guy at the side of the 115:chuckle
Be interesting to see how the "I had a hot tip on the 4th at Kawartha Downs and was trying to get my bet in before post time!" defense works for this jackass.

never thought it was possible, was he off duty or something
Also why in the world would you wanna pull over another cop car, and make him look bad infront of everyone else. What a snitch..

I find everyone's reaction kind of backwards. I mean most people in the car scene are against the extreme repercussions of this law. Shouldn't those people be more supportive of the cop?

Even if this goes to court I am sure he will get off just like the 75yr old man who got off of the "street racing" charge. It seems as if the law is there to charge young drivers who are not COPS.

I'm fully in favour of them when it comes to the 50-over part. My issues are with the other subjective applications.

Well, it's good to know that you support laws which circumvent your right to due process.

If you're caught breaking into a house, aren't they going to put you in cuffs and take you to the station before everything has a chance to get sorted out?
It's not like people are driving around doing 48 over the limit and a slightly miscalibrated radar gun is getting them in huge trouble.
50 over is so far beyond the speed limit that even that margin of error becomes somewhat irrelevant. There's no question that you know you're speeding... by a lot... so you can't really complain all that much if you're busted.
As mentioned before... it's when the law is applied subjectively for "stunt driving" which can be pretty much anything the officer wants it to be it seems, that I have a big problem with it.

That just further proves my point - no conviction is entered on your record and no fines are laid unless/until you have been convicted in court.
Getting charged under the new law results in an instant suspension on your record and large impound fees. You have no recourse to recover these fees or to have the suspension purged from your record regardess of whether or not you are found guilty.
And 50km/h over the limit is not so difficult to achieve. There are many places in rural Ontario where the limit suddenly drops from 80km/h down to 50km/h. It's not such a stretch to be doing 100km/h in the 80 zone, and then not being quick enough to slow down for the 50 zone and getting caught. Passing vehicles on undivided highways is another one. The rule always used to be get your pass done as quickly as possible to avoid spending time in the opposing lane of traffic. Now, you have to watch your speed to make sure you don't hit the magic 50km/h mark.
In any event, it's unlikely that I will be able to change your mind, and you certainly aren't going to change mine :) So we can agree to disagree on this point.
