For the past couple of days, I have been getting rattling noise from my trunk. I have emptied the trunk, tightened the Jack, but I still get the noise. Its like metals banging against other metals. It sounds like its from the trunk. Any ideas ?
Thanks.

Damn, I thought that was my car that I put the body in *runs to check*

Check the wheel well also and see if there's anything in there maybe?

Could it be your lock nut key bouncing around in the wheel wells?

Only when I hit a bump though. I'll remove the spare tire and the jack this afternoon. Then I'll see because nothing else will be in the trunk.

Look also in the compartment that holds the jack on the left hand side. Lots of nooks and cranies down there.

If it's not the jack, spare tire, etc. Check your sway bar endlinks. A lot of people who claim they have a clunk in the trunk usually have a lose endlink.

I went to the dealer this morning - before I lose my sanity! I was told that the noise is coming from a broken baffle? in the muffler. A new muffler has been ordered on warranty. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks.

Simple solution, get yourself a nice new TRZ Dogbone engine mount, let the car run while parked, turn on the a/c to bog the engine a bit and search for said rattle because it won't stop until you find it lol.

I hear a rattle while I am on the Highway. Coming from the back. I thought it was my Barbaro plate I have on the window, but it wasnt.

Remove EVERYTHING (jack, spare tire, etc) from your trunk and drive around over some bumps. If the noise goes away you know it's one of those things. If it clunks on almost every bump it may be the sway bar endlinks. Otherwise it could be a bunch of things.

...or take it to the dealership.

The muffler was replaced this morning and .. .... you guessed right, the clanking noise is still there ! I returned to the dealership again, and after another round of test drives and inspections, it has been traced to a broken rear springs. I am not so sure how or why the rear suspension springs could be broken. I realize that I am overweight ( all of 180 lbs), but I am working to get the weight down !

I will have the spring unit replaced on Thursday. Stay tuned.

Thursday May 29 Update:

The rear Left coil spring was replaced this afternoon and that resolved the noise problem. I am still not sure how the spring broke, but I'm glad the noise is gone. Thanks to the guys at Scarborough Mazda.
