What's scaring me is that I'm sure that soon (rather than later) there will be a huge jump in prices once speculators jump back in the oil commodity market. They say that if we face a global economic depression it won't happen right away but I'm not so sure we are going to face a huge global depression like people are talking about. I think the demand for oil will rise again shortly.

Investors have taken their money out of the market and have it parked in short term investments. That money will eventually get re-invested somewhere. Now if we only knew WHERE all that money is going to be re-invested. Warren Buffet where are you now!!!

Anyway, I'm no expert in this field whatsoever so I'm just speculating too :)

WOW, How long has it been since I saw gas price at $0.88/L?
I filled up on sunday night at $1.00/L for V-Power.. Felt much better than paying $1.40/L like I use to couple months ago.

82.5 in Ottawa. :bana

Should be interesting to see how much it goes back up tomorrow...

The TSX energy sector jumped 5.9 per cent. The light sweet crude contract for December ended the day ahead 10.4 per cent to close at its highest level in two weeks, up $6.62 at $70.53.

The latest...

Energy stocks declined 4.5 per cent with crude oil closing under US$60 a barrel for the first time in nearly two years.

The crude futures contract briefly touched their lowest level in 21 months - down to $58.32 - but regained some ground to close 4.9 per cent lower, or down $3.08, to US$59.33.

A report from the Bank of Montreal said Canada's resource boom is over and won't return for at least another year, mostly because of the U.S. recession and weakening demand from countries like China.

I came home from my honeymoon in Tahiti and was shocked to see that gas prices had dropped to the mid-80's...especially since gas was at the $8 US/gallon in Tahiti!!!

79!! GEEZ. I'm not complaining but I believe that they have trained the population to believe these prices are low by making us pay really high prices for such a long time. Think about it, back then we would have complained about 70 cents.

to be honest, im really not complaining. I just compare it to what we paid before and as much as i dislike the fact that it should be lower, paying this price beats paying 1.30 a couple months ago

When I moved to Calgary from HK, I remember gas being 34.9 to 49.9... yeah, if it was then, I'd be complaining about how much gas prices went up... but now I'd much rather pay .80/L than 1.30/L

I agree with both of you, but that's EXACTLY the point! We've been 'conditioned' to be happy with the fact that we're 'only' paying around 80 cents a liter since we were paying 1.30 (or more) just a month or 2 ago.

I'm sure no one would complain if the price 'settles' in the .90 cents to 1 dollar/litre range for the the next year or so. But that would mean the oil companies are making almost double the profits they were making just a couple of years ago when the price of a barrel was around 50 or 60 dollars (as it is now) but the price per litre was under 70 cents!

So we've been conditioned to accept this and keep quiet about it since everyone is just happy that they're not paying 1.30 anymore...

Anyway, I guess it's classic market economics at work!

79 cents. good stuff :D. thing is i was content with paying 1.30. i paid it i didnt care. think about it people. we have a car thats cheap to fill up. even when it was 1.30 the car at MOST would be 60 bucks. nowadays people with v6's pay that price. we pay anywhere from 35-40$. when gas hits 40 cents. then i pledge i will run naked through guelph.

I was shocked to see 76.5 here in London today. Is this really a good thing? A few days ago I went to a talk by David Suzuki and he was saying very soon it will jump back up dramatically.

Wow, good to see Mr. Suzuki really going out on a limb with that prediction...LOL

Gas and oil prices are at their lowest they have been in 3 years and he predicts the price will still go back up. I would have been more impressed if he would have predicted the price would crash like it has.

Of course the price will go back up. There is still plenty demand globally and once the markets reach what the investors feel is the bottom, you will see a lot of money come back into the market in a hurry and prices will start going up on a lot more than oil.

I don't see how the current price can be a bad thing. It is dictated by the current market, demands and market conditions. I'll enjoy it while it stays at this price or lower.

any diesel engine could run on natural vegetable oil. In canada you'd have to put an additive in to help prevent it from solidifying during the winter (or just store your car someplace warm all the time).

too bad we don't have a diesel mazda3 in north america.
