215/60/17 has softer side wall than 205/50/17.:chuckle

u have to keep the radius of the tire the same otherwise your speedo will be off.
Thus, the width doesn't have much to do with it.
It is going to be based on the tire itself. (i.e. the sidewall)

I have to buy new tires, and i was thinking if i can go wider to 215???
is there going to be a problem with anything like turning?

17" stock rim? you better stay @ 205/50/17.

I am currently running 215/45/17 with no issues as of yet..and dont expect any when I lower it too.

I pretty sure it was only 1.8% faster, as per http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Wss also the tire Allen recommended to me with my rims,

just to clarify, speedo is 1.8% faster; not the car

215/45 is fine but I personally prefer the look of 205/50. It just closes up the wheel gap a lot better and will still quite a comfortable ride. It depends what you use your car for. If you are really looking at stiffening it up to help on turns etc. Then yah 215/45 but if you want a to keep the comfortable ride and just need to get from one place to the next I suggest 205/50. Going to 215/45 will increase your wheel gap... just wanted to make sure people are aware of that one.

+1 225/45 would be a better option to keep wheel gap similar. Closer to 205/50 in diameter as well than 215/45.

Why not just go for the 215/50's...same gap and a touch wider (1cm)...absolutely no problems!!

BTW, Simply Tire has the Falken 912's in that size going for a measly $500! if I'm not mistaken :)

Allen put on 215/45 tires on mine few weeks ago when i got them and yeah the gap is a bit more than i thougt it would be, but still i prefer the smoother ride as driving on the highway is a dream come true. I will sometimes just take the highway on purpose now just because i love it so much. lowered on eibachs too does help :)

Gap would actually be slightly less with 215/50 (half inch bigger diameter than 205/50) but speedo will read 1.8% slower than actual speed FWIW

That's why I suggested the size, less gap (.4 inch to be exact) leaving a .6 or slightly larger gap (with pro-kits)!....the difference in the speedo is so minimal at about 1.4 kph to every 100 kph (less revolutions per km too) :)

225 will be better, but I just assumed he was talking about stock rims. 225 would be great for an aftermarket rim, but 215 is the most i'd suggest anyone on OEM.

So, Krisecka, what kind of rims would you be choosing this tire size for?

With the stock 17x6.5 215/45R17's will fit but it's noticibly wide and the walls bulge a bit.

With an aftermarket 17x7" wheel... i's a great size to be.. better to bet wider with better traction.
