F'n Triple OTs... some of us have to get up mighty early to be at work on time! hahaha, Pens dominated for the first 2 periods, and then crapped the bed. No way they should have won with the way that they played the 3rd and OT... but I'm glad that they did.

B-A-N-A-N-A-S!!! Go Pens!
Imagine the Pens win the Cup, that'd hurt so much knowing you were 30 secs from taking it all. Love this series!
:bana :bana2
that was a crazy game... but GO PENS!!

yes true, but that first period had another 2-3 pens goals that just didn't go in, so even though detriot owned the play for most of the game the pens could have easily had 4 or 5 nothing first period

Bullshit 4 minute penalty!
That is pretty much the ONLY penalty called in the OT that you can't argue. He got his stick up, and he cut the guy. That's pretty black and white, if you ask me. I couldn't believe the TWO goaltender interference penalties. Fleury sure sold those pretty good. Neither of them should have been called, however if a goal had been scored on either of them, it also should not have been allowed...

Thing is though... if you're arguing that a goal should not have been allowed due to the interference, then it's appropriate to call a penalty on the play.
Right?

did anyone count how many post were hit in that game? Detroit were hungry but refs were calling BS calls all OT. I knew it was over when they called the last 4min one ... just sucks to end it that way after all that work from the wings. Pens got a few free calls from the refs...I remember the "trip" on datsyuk, the replay showed clearly the guy losing his edge and falling even before he went for the puck...and fleury was a good actor too :) Almost like the refs were told to give pens an edge....
Oh well Detroit in 6

I knew that someone was going to say this, and yes, I totally agree. However, in the Stanley Cup finals, OT, in a potential last game, and the whistles have basically already been put away, it seemed a bit odd. I think it can be argued either way, really. But yes, I do agree with you that if a goal should not be allowed, then a penalty is warranted. My reasoning for saying that is just my personal feeling as to the flow of the game, really.
Zetterburg was a good call, as he made no attempt to avoid the contact. Cleary made an attempt to get out of the way, there was a dive by Fleury. I don't think the NHL wants another cup deciding goal that has to be reviewed for 10 minutes. The worst call was the ref stopping the play when Datsyuk hit the bar and the play was still on. It would have been horrible if there was a break away or second scoring chance that was voided by a quick whistle.

1. he had the puck when he hit the goalie....
2. everyone was celebrating and lights went off on that crossbar...so yea good call to stop the play....
What a long game! I said to the wife that if Pens tie it up they will win it in overtime, oddly enough I was right :)
Game 6 will be interesting!

Not surprised to see them throwing out the whistle on everything but Goaltender Interference. Especially w/ how tight they're watching Holmstrom all playoff long, they're gonna call Goalie Interference even if there's a sliver of doubt.
I don't really blame Fleury for embellishing a bit either... you're a goal away from hitting the links and getting pummeled w/ all kinds of shots, desperate times call for desperate measures.
As was said above, the 4 min high sticking penalty was a no brainer, they couldn't not call that one.
Game 6 in Pittsburgh is gonna be insane!

Even if you have the puck, you can't just crash the goalie.
As for the call on the non-goal... that's a tough one. I mean... if they thought that maybe it was a goal, then they have to stop the play. It's the only call they can make. You can't just let the play continue, look at it later, and then roll back the clock a minute or so.
What if the Pens took that puck down the ice and scored... then they reviewed the earlier play and the puck HAD gone into the net on the Detroit shot. What then??

The thing with waving off a goal due to goalie interference is that there must be a goalie interference call or at least intent to call the penalty by a ref on the ice before the puck goes in. The ref can't call it after a goal happens, nor can they go upstairs to review for goalie interference.
So I think it's better to call it even if it is potentially the final game for the cup than to have a goal result from goalie interference and the refs didn't call anything.

This has happened many times in the past, as long as it is reviewed during the next stoppage in play. The exact situation has happened in the NHL in the past, goal missed at one end and one scored at the other, only to have the first goal that was missed called a goal. They then put the time that had run off the clock between the goals back on the clock.

This isn't rollerball! You can't just check the goalie out of the net.

meh, both Zetterberg and Cleary tried to avoid Fleury, I thought both penalty calls were crap.
Zetterberg was being checked and he tried to cut to his left to avoid the goalie. It's not like he went barrelling straight in.
What the hell was Cleary supposed to do? he went flying past the post...again not into Fleury.

Again, it's all zero tolerance and err on the side of caution when it comes to goalie interference.
Plus, let's not forget that Osgood's had his Oscar moment against the Stars when he looked like he got shot after Ribeiro slashed him on the chest at the end of that one game. Ribeiro was a dumbass for doing that for sure but goalies take way harder shots to the chest that that. Again, it's all about any advantage you can get to get the ultimate prize.

Can you say Brett Hull '99...
Getting a goalie off of his game by doing those things has been around for a long time. Holmstrom is now understanding what happens when you are a regular offender, which sucks for me since I have him in my pool.
Fleury took a nice hit tonight from Franzen.
