View Full Version : Disabling DRL
I've looked around and spent 7 hours trying to install my HIDs today.
In the end everything got done but they are still flickering while using DRLs. I couldn't find them in either of the fuses, can someone tell me which one it is that controls the DRLs?
Secondly,
After installing my HIDs, once I started my car it would start reving by itself, even when it was in neutral. Usually in a regular rhythm like the car was trying to breath in deep breaths - honestly I other than the fact that my car is messed I thought it was kinda cool, like my car had come alive. Also after installing the HIDs the engine light came on. I know there has already been talk about this but I can't remember the reason people had the engine light come on. Something to do with DRLs?
I don't know if this is a freak accident as we did not touch anything with respect to the intake or engine. We tried cleaning the air intake sensor and that just made it worse. Both people who were helping me, both mechanics, said it would be a one in a million chance that it would have anything to do with the HIDs we just installed.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you hooked up the kit to your stock wiring that why they flicker.
Did you get a relay harness with your kit? The relay bypasses your factory DRL.
No I didn't get a relay harness

Thats why your lights flicker...
The HID's require more power to ignite the bulb.
Also the stock wiring can not handle the power needed by the HIDs
Get a relay before you do damage to your electrical system

You have an 04-06 i assume?
If you're on an 07+..the DRL is just a fuse you pull out but I don't think its that simple on an 04-06, since the DRLs are NOT your high beams but rather your low beams.

In your sig, it says you have a 2007. If you are using the stock harness, why would the HIDs flicker because of the DRLs? Aren't the high beams used as DRL in 07+ models?
I've got an 06.
How do I disable DRLs ?

Because I didn't get the relay harness with my kit ... I had to make my own but I didn't know what to do with the 12V battery, do i just connect the wires to a regular 12V?
And the flickering is the least of my worries. Anybody have any ideas on what might be causing my second problem?
Also, because I haven't disabled the DRLs, could that also be the cause of my engine light being on?
I remember reading about how HID installation could cause the engine light to go on but I can't remember nor find what the cause/solution was?

Save yourself the headaches and such. this is your electrical system you're dealing with
See if you can buy a relay harness from one of our sponsors. SSG (nextmod) sells Prolumen kits and should have parts available.
I got my kit from SSG, didn't come with any relay harness? Was it extra?

Sorry for the multiple posts.
We used 12 guage wire to set up our grounds ... the only difference is the 2 12V batteries.

2 12V batteries? I believe that you just tap into the existing car battery, how come you have 2?

AS far as I know it should come with the relay...PM SSG for more info.

+1 ...

Sorry I was mistaken, they're not 12V batteries. If you look at the picture what I meant to say was I didn't get the things labelled, Battery 12V+, Signal Wire or Ground.
In other words, if you divide the picture in half from top right corner to bottom left corner. I got everything in bottom right side of the half.
Was I supose to get everything that's in that picture if I got my kit from SSG?

Not sure if Peter supplies a relay harness, PM him or call him to inquire. If not, get one, it'll make the install 100x easier, you just follow the link I posted and you're golden.
Know anyone that sells them?
Also, I called a Mazda dealership near me and I told him my problem with the engine light and told him it happened after installing HIDs. He seemed very concerned that I installed HIDs and said I shouldn't because it could melt the headlight housing. Has anyone heard of this happening? I've got the 8k bulbs.

Did you tell them you installed the HID's? If so, they told you it was the HID's to avoid doing warranty work, try another dealer and don't tell them about your attempted install and see what they say. Return all the lighting to the original set up and take it into a dealership to be looked at. With regards to the harness, like I said, call Peter and see if he can get you one, if not, check here:

I agree with sauga_kid...
You said you got a CEL after you installed the HID kit.
Restore lighting to stock.
Disconnect the battery and reset the ECU.
You said you cleaned the air intake sensor. Do you mean the MAF? What did you clean it with?

Ya the MAF. I think it was just pressured air. Not really sure what he used.
How do you reset the ECU and how do you disconnect the battery for?
Thanks for all the help guys.

Disconnect the NEGATIVE cable from the battery. Let the car sit for a minute or so...reconnect. You will loose any radio settings. If you still get a CEL then take it to a dealer and have them look at it.

no my kits dont come with the relay but we do all our installation at McGuyver and he puts the relay in
Just an update ...
Turns out it was the MAF that was failing. Took it to the dealership, and they put a new one in. Sent it in Thurs. night but service department was closed. They called me with what the problem was at 11:45am the next day and were done by 1:00pm. Couldn't have had better service at Kieswetter Mazda in Kitchener.
Also thanks to McGuyver for putting in my HIDs for me. He went above and beyond his call of duty. Would recommend him for any install (that he's willing to do).
Also thanks to yearofthat and sauga_kid for all your advice.
Cheers,
Kevin

Hey kevin,
thanks for the good review but its not so much whati am willing to do its what i can do without a hoist. I am willing to try pretty much anything as long as i can devise a way to do it w/o a hoist.
