I currently have a set of steelie 16" rims with winter tires on them but I'm looking to get rid (most likely selling) of those and get a set of 18" rims. My dilemma is that I also have my stock 17" rims that I wish to keep and use for my winters and I heard that traction on tires for 17" is not good for Winter.:rant

Any insights or recommendations on what to do? Hoping to make a decision in a day or 2...HELPPPP!!

205/50/17 winter tires will be fine for our cars. There won't be issues, unless you got a crappy winter tire.

Although, IMO I would keep the 16'' steelies. It's easier to get Rims damaged during the winter. I could careless if I bent a steel rim

And even a crappy winter tire will be better than the best all season tires for winter traction.

As mentioned though... why not just keep the 16's for the winter? Tires will be a little cheaper for them.

Don't spend money you don't need to, just use the 16's.

I Dont care about being flashy in the winter.... i use 15 steelies and i beliee the smaller the tire is in the winter the better

I have winters on my 17's, and haven't had a problem. They are great and saved me having to pick up steelies knowing i was going to get rims.

I guess the overall message here is that since you already have the 16" steelies, save the money on winter tires by getting 16's other then 17's. Any winter tire will be better in the winter then all- seasonal.

I think you guys misunderstood me, let me reiterate a bit.
- I already have 16" steelies with winter tires (in storage now)
- I currently have on the stock Mz 3 17" snowflakes
- I am getting 18" tires very soon

Now my issue is should I sell the 16" and keep the 17" stocks or sell the 17" stock rims and keep the 16" steelies for winter driving?

Basically want to know if I should sell the original Mz 3 17" stock rims or not.

everyone has responded to your question saying stick with your 16s since you already have them.

I simply responded with regards to you saying "17 is not good for Winter."

You will lose more money trying to sell your 16s and buy tires for your 17s. If you really want the OEM look then keep those instead. What do you want more the extra cash or the OEM look.

For example...
It will cost you nothing to sell your 17's because you sell as is. If you were to sell your 16's you would get that money and need to buy winter tires pretty much expelling any profit. Atleast when you sell your 17s you can put that money towards your 18s. Not to mention that 16" tires are cheaper as everyone has stated above.

Just curious, and I know it;'s the wrong time to ask...what's the price difference gonna be between a set of 16" and 17" snow tires? Let's just say I'm in a similar boat as OP, but will consider going 17" purely for cosmetic reasons...

When I was buying my winters this year, it was a difference of $20 between 17 tires on my stock rims and a set of 16's on new steel rims. So about $50 a tire I guess is the difference.

My reasoning of why to keep the 16 steelies is because the OEM snowflakes have large openings, so all the road grime, salt and crap can go through the rim hitting the brake/brake lines and other expensive stuff. With steel rims less crap gets through. Also if you end up hitting the pothole the size of Hamilton a steel rims is a lot cheaper and easier to source than a OEM wheel.

As the rest of the posts have said...sick with the 16's.

Thanks a Gaazillion guys, I'll sell the stock rims and keep my steelies as it makes sense cause safety in the winter is my main concern. In the event I sell my car X amount of years from now the prospect buyer will like my current rim selection...YAY! Getting my summer wheels tomorrow...Thanks a bunch guys.

yeah i've experience on bot 16s and 17s for winters.
i didnt find that the 17s were any worse. just gotta get a good tire.
the only difference i noticed was the 17s were harsher going over packed down snow/ice.

For a Member to post a new thread in the Classified they must have a minimum of 50 posts and must have been a member for at least 2 weeks , to prevent our Forum from becoming a medium for outside sales.

You just need 4 more useful posts. Patience.....:)

And a heads up: They may remove your post here just because you are essentially making a post/thread outside the buy/sell section. I'm not sure though.
