View Full Version : Radiator Fan problems
Lately I have been having a problem with my radiator fan running really high. I can hear it at the stop lights and especially when I am parking in the garage after a trip. It happens on short and or long trips but it takes atleast 5 mins to kick in it seems. I have tried it with the rain, humidity, dry air, hot and mild temperatures and it still kicks in.
I know it cant be a bad thing as all it will be doing is cooling down the engine more but I am just afraid that it will always be on and may not be working when I need it most. My 04 never had a problem like this before hence why I picked up on it pretty quick.
I have been to one dealer and made sure to bring them out to my still running car to hear the sound. They mostly said it was a problem with my electronic rust proofing, HIDs and/or my alarm but could not fully diagnose it.
Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this?

I have this issue too. I think its something to do with my exhaust. After I installed my speed3 OEM exhaust it started to happen. Its definitely noticeable when the car is idling.
Hope someone has some thoughts on this.

Take it too another dealer or shop of your choice and get another opinion! ....it just seems to me the last place was not interested in finding the problem and just making excuses i.e HIDs etc;

Yah I plan to, I just don't have the time at the moment. Figured I would see if anyone else has had the problem.
No clue man, but I hope it works out. Get a second opinion going.

update on this: i brought my car over to the dealer and they said they'd have to change the radiator module. Should see the result next week when I bring the car in.

Could be the rad fan assembly Pat. We just had an 08 in here with the similar issue you're encountering. I had to order a radiator fan assembly.

haha thanks
can't make it there till next wednesday.
few more days of annoying fan sounds
hahaha that is funny. Atleast that gives me a clue for the next dealership I take it to.
The only other thing I found similar was a guy on M3F bu he said his gauge was reading hot, they replaced his thermostat and a bad gasket.
Thanks for the update!!!
I plan to take to another dealer in about two weeks, im moving next week so I really have no time at the moment.
Any updates with this? I plan to book an appt. for saturday to get it checked out again.

Changed my fan assembly at the dealer last week. Unfortunately it is still running at very high speeds all the time. No change whatsoever.
I am gonna drop it in again this week. Hopefully they will find out the source of the issue.
Pulling in to my driveway today I noticed that my engine was running hot, I think something has to be up with the temperature sensor.
Gauge was showing me that the engine bay was heating up again this morning, gotta get it in ASAP now. Gonna be tricky with only 1 car...
Well I just got the call and they're replacing the thermostat, bad news is they wont have the part until tomorrow and are advising me not to drive the car.
Now I am out of a car for the night and the morning, gotta figure out how I am going to get the wife to work...

Yea we replaced the fan unit thinking it would solve the issue turns out the thermostat was the problem all along.
Got the car back today and it seemed to be running fine now. I will be keeping an eye on it for a couple days.

i had the same problem with that. today was hot n sticky outside soo i turned on the A/C put it to 3 right to get it running sooo after 2-3mins i look at my temp gauge and it was heating up.. sooo i pull into a parking lot. poped up the hood n it cool down for 30mins soo i turn on my car to see if the rad fan was spinnning, it wasnt. when i was driving home it went back to normal .. sooo could it be the rad fan? and the thermostat?

getting the exact same problem just starting this week.
Engine would run really hot, then I'd turn the engine off and let the fan blow heat max. That would solve the problem temporarily, until a few minutes of driving.
Doesn't seem to be a problem on the highway, but only when I'm stuck in traffic or doing a lot of stops. I thought it was the A/C, but turning that off made no difference.
