Hey,
I've been hearing a clunking noise for a while
The clunking only occurs at stop or slow speeds when I turn the steering wheel & clunk comes near the steering wheel lock (either full left or right), position is not fixed.
Search came up with nothing, if this has been asked, can someone please point me in the right direction.

is your car lowered? could the strut bearing not turning smoothly, the spring whines up then releases and 'clunk' when it gets enough pressure.

Did you find out what's doing it? Mine has been doing the same thing for several months now. The dealership doesn't know what it is. My car is lowered and they figured it was the springs twisting and making the noise (certainly not, but they clung to that). It's getting worse and I'd like to get it fixed. One mechanic I talked to suggested it might be the upper strut mounts. I'm tempted to replace my struts with the mazdaspeed and call it a day.

wtf... my Bearings were brand new at install. I'm going to Jimmy today for tires, I'll ask him about it.
My bumpstops were also new. =(

I had the same problem after I lowered my car. I tightened my endlinks and the sound stopped. Try giving that a shot.

I would suggest to everyone not to modify ur car in anyway if ur still coverd under warranty, cause the minuite something goes wrong there gonna blame it on ur mod, even if it had nothing to do with it, just so they dont have to cover the cost of fixing the problem, i was going to get a intake, header and exhust but now with all the shit i have to go trough i wont do it till my warranty runs out, its just not worth the headaches u have to go through afterwards, for now the cars stayin bone stock

MOT has been very mod friendly, at least to me. I have no problems claiming warranty. I claimed an transmission while lowered. I'm claiming something bigger this month

I'm not sure if my problem can be described as the same,
When i turn the steering wheel on my 08.5 GS i hear a clunking sound as well, only sometimes though. But it seems as if the clunk is coming from the rear of the car. At first i thought it may be the jack hitting the body, but i figured iw as turning at too slow a speed for the jack to actaully move..
Not sure what the issue is. it's going in for its 4 month service in the next few days i'l ahev to inqure.
btw: my car is not modified in any way (except for a shark fin :D)

I'm pretty sure I have the same problem, my tech diagnosed it as upper mounts and bushings... when I take a 45-90 degree turn it sounds like a series of clunks, almost as if something is rolling through the engine bay (which it isn't). Keep us posted if you get it fixed, I'm really hoping to not spend any money adn I hope its something simple!

MOT is an excepsion, its a fact that most not all dealers will make up excuses if u have any sort of mod on ur car , even if its something smaller , ex changing your speakers and u had a problem with rattling way before, there gonna blame it on ur speakers, its not just mazda dealers , its most car dealers, personally i dont like to waste my time going back and forth trying to prove its not my mod , for now i am going to have to stick to minor cosmetic mods till warranty runs out or i buy a used car with zero warranty

I had a loud ticking sound on a much older Mazda. I was told all sorts of reasons and even had an axle replaced. They finally put it down to the steel collars in the aluminum wheels.
The main part of the wheel was aluminum but where the lug nuts pass through, that is a steel collar mounted in the aluminum. If it is not tight enough or due to different thermal expansion/contraction rates of the two metals, then the collar can slip a little bit under extra pressure like when the steering was fully cranked over. Hope that helps...

I've had my car modified/exhaust/lowered blah blah blah since day 1 and never had any issues. All my TSB's and other warranty complaints were always fixed with no problems so maybe its you and your dealership

^ +1 ...I've Never had a problem with Scarboro Mazda (Mods wise), as a matter of fact the techs and service guys all seem to like and appreciate what I've done with my car and how I take care of her! :)
Sorry back on topic; It's probably the strut bearings, you could try loosening the nuts and retorquing them to proper specs....worth a shot!

so i have been having a clunk noise for a while. when i was taking apart the suspension the strut mount fell part(came apart in my hands) and this is what i saw...
part of it was broken (missing part of the inner lip) went out bought new ones and now so far no problems.
so i suggest that if you are having a clunking noise from the front suspension that it is most likely the strut mount bearings
