View Full Version : 225/45-18 stock RX-8 tire size on my 3?

I have a line on a set of RX-8 rims, with almost brand new stock size 225/45-18 tires.

They will be just under .25" taller radially (ground to the hub). Has anyone else run this size on their 3 until they wore out?

Take a look at this thread.
It should answer your question.

'some say yes, some say no, some don't recommend it'

That doesn't really answer my question. I guess I'll find out tonight when I buy them. I can't see it hitting the fender lip, since its the same width as a 40 series.. if it just hits the plastic fender liner high up in the wheel well, that's nothing a little heat won't fix.

Sorry if I "didn't really answer your question". If you looked at some of the links (and not just what I said above/below the link) or even at some of the responses in that thread, you will quickly see that the reason why I said that was because some people have no issues, while others do (as I already stated). The results seem to vary by car. Doesn't look like anyone has worn their tires out though.

Edit: Or maybe I got ahead of myself. I don't know. I am running on no sleep.

Edit2: As you can see, you're getting the same answers as the ones in that thread anyway. And there are other threads that basically say the same thing over and over again.

Anyway, let us know what happens with your setup.:)

Your stock tires are 205/50R17, that is 3.47% larger than the 245/45R18's which outside of the usually recommended 3% difference.
Now you can run them if you want, realise that your Speedometer will be off, also you may have to account for clearance issues.

As he said, if your speedometer will be off anyway, why not take 215/35/18? Looks prettier.

I guess I should have said I had already read all of those threads before I started this thread (including searching on mazda3forums as well). Do I need to post a search resume to avoid the flogging by the search nazi? j/k :chuckle

I started this thread because I thought maybe with the recent popularity increase of RX-8 rims on the 3, maybe someone has more recent experience. That's why I asked if anyone had run that size until they wore out (and then replaced them with the proper size). I thought it made sense, that people have bought RX-8 rims with the stock size RX-8 tire still on it, and ran them until they wore out.

Sorry if I sounded harsh. No hard feelings?:)

What is the point of this reply? I don't recall saying, 'I have a line on a set of RX-8 rims, with almost brand new stock size 215/35-18 tires'. :AH

Bought them and put them on tonight in my garage. Got to use my new IR impact gun too.

Went for a quick drive, no rubbing. Did a slow turn into the driveway at full lock, no rubbing.

I'll find out on Friday night on the trip to the cottage when the car is packed with the two of us, stuff for the weekend, and our 60lb Boxer in the back.

Just keep an eye on it... cause you certainly don't want the damage from rubbing on your fender and tire.

Absolutely no rubbing, even fully loaded to/from the cottage.

Don't worry, when it comes time to replacing them with 40 profile, I'll pay you a visit.

What if your car is NOT lowered? Will you still get the rubbing?

I currently run 225.45.18 showed allen.. He said since my tires are 4mm left of tread it will have no issues now of rubbing.. When I get a new set of 225.45.18 then theres some rubbing issues as it is tall.

Im lowering down to 215.45.18 more comfortable then 225.40.18
