Is there a benefit to doing your first oil change early? On book, it says every 8000km or 4 months for the first change.

That depends on what you mean by early! What is your mileage now? Some including myself believe its best to change the original oil ASAP~ (Keeping in mind the break-in period).Reason no.1 being; To discard of any minuet metal filings...Secondly the oem oil will be quite contaminated by then with fuel and especially special break-in lube placed on bearings, cams etc; ....1000-1500k would be a good time to think about changing it.

Waste of money...
I waited until 8k and then went full synthetic.
No need to change it until you get to 4months or 8000km. OEM oil is a semi-sythentic and they run the engine and then replace the oil before they ship it from the factory.

Doubt it will be free if it is outside the 'recommended' service schedule.

Does going Full Synthetic have any advantages or should I still with OEM semi?

Hi Jeff,
I am close to 3400 km presently and was wondering if I can visit any Mazda dealership (bought my car from Mazda of Brampton and was thinking of going there to do my services) to get an oil change done with full synthetic oil, when the car reaches 8000 km.
Secondly, I thought all services are to be paid by the customer and not by the dealership. What do you mean by being free, if it is outside the recommended service schedule?
Thanks...TM3GX

Its only free if dealership gives you free oil changes.. Something extra that dealer offers when you buy a car.
And what I meant is that I get for free, is I have 5 years free oil changes card..So that why I was wandering what kind of oil they will use, or is it by my choice?

Thanks for the clarification xokx...makes sense. So can you request synthetic oil to be put into your car at the dealership or does one have to buy this oil from outside and tell them to put it in for you? Which is the best synthetic oil to put in a 2008.5 Mazda 3 Sport GX? Sorry for all these questions...I am just not sure about this process and want to give the best for my car, with what I can afford.

Better to start with synthetic and buy your own oil and tell the dealer to use your oil, make sure its in the front seat. Its better because its cheaper that way. The dealer charges you something like $30/litre so your total bill would be $80 just for oil change. So its definately better to bring your own oil and pay for labour only which is pennies. As for filter find out if you use filter or catridge, then you can buy your own filter as well, not the catridge though.

Its good to get Synthetic only if you plan to keep your car for a long time. It will run and perform better. Regular oil is good if you going to sell your car in a year or two/ or if its a lease car and you won't be keeping it after.

Thanks for the clarification once again xokx. Please may I pick your brain for a little longer?
1) After reading the forum, I found that AMSOIL 5W-20 Snythetic Oil is the best for my 2008.5 Mazda 3 Sport GX. The 5W-20 is what the Mazda manual recommendeds for my car, as I don't have a turbocharger. Now the AMSOIL bottle says 1 US Quart. How many bottles would I need?
2) How do I figure out whether my car has a cartridge or a filter? If it is a filter, what brand of filter should I buy?

1) 1US Quart I think is a small bottle, so you need 4 of these Or 1 huge jug. I ususally go with castrol synthetic, but its very rare product for our cars. Only comes with small jugs..
2) Yours is 2.0L engine, so its a filter that you need. Go to CT and look in their catologue, you should be able to find it.

Amsoil is arguably the best synthetic out there right now, so it was a good choice! You should buy 5 bottles as I believe it will take more then 4 (US) qts with a filter change....As for the filter just stick with the Mazda filters, they are actually quite good.

Thank you x_o_k_x and Falgrum 3. You guys have been greatly helpful. I will buy around five bottles and tell the dealer to put this oil instead of their own. I just hope I can find a trustworthy dealership who will do what I ask.
With regards to the filter, I saw Amsoil also makes filters...check it out...

Not sure if you get them in Canada though. I did see Canadian Tire advertising for the AMSOIL 5W-30 Snythetic Oil, but not the 5W-20 oil. Hopefully they will have it.
