View Full Version : What would cause Excess Wear in the REAR?

I have a 2004 Mazda 3 Sport, lowered on Eibach Springs.
My rear tires wore faster than my front ones (which is not normal on a FWD car). Although the wear was EVEN (therefore it's not camber), it's odd that the rear would wear faster.
Any thoughts on what the cause would be?
I just bought a new set of tires, and I would like to prevent it from happening.

Q1) What do you have stored in the trunk?
Q2) did you ever rotate your tires?
Q3) Did you lighten anything in the front
Q4) What is your alignment specs for your car, in particular Toe
Out of spec rear toe will eat your tires like kids with ice cream

Its usual. I've noticed it on mine as well. No idea why.

1) Subwoofer, Other than the occasional occurance, my trunk is usually empty + the woofer
2) I rotate to keep the tires with most tread in the front of the car for handling and control.
3) No, the front of my car is stock.
4) No idea. Last alignment was about 8-10 months ago, about a month after I lowered the car.
I rotate once a year when I put them on.

Do you have the alignment print out?
If you do, can you post your rear specs?
If not I suggest you go do an alignment again just to be safe (just rear alignment is fine, since fronts are not causing you problems)
Get a more conservative toe setting (-0.15 ish is bad in my idea. The alignment place you go to, can you a better suggestion.)

LOL... this thread sounds really dirty. Your e-brake could be dragging too, or you take corners really hard. Improper inflation of the tires could be a factor too.

improper inflation will not likely cause Excessive even wear.
Taking corners hard, will eat the front tires more, unless he only takes uphill turns.

when you lower your car, the camber and/or toe can go out of spec (in both front and rear).
when you adjust the camber links in the rear, it also affects the toe (I saw this occur when the mechanic at BC auto was adjusting my camber).
negative camber wear the inside tires, positive wear the outside.
when you lowered your car, did you do a 4 wheel alignment?
then do another alignment after you got your camber links installed?

?
When I brought my car in for an alignment, they were able to adjust the rear toe, and I don't have camber links.

The toe is adjustable, it is the camber that is not. Aftermarket camber links that are a different length or that are adjustable are required to change the rear camber.
But I think Ami already knew that! :chuckle
