The new Mazda 3 has zoom-zoomed in – and it’s set to raise the bar in the family hatchback sector next year!
It’s off to a good start, too. The car is based on the class-leading Ford Focus, and blends these proven underpinnings with chassis expertise from the MX-5.
Refinement and cabin quality are high on the agenda for Mazda, so expect plenty of soft-touch cabin plastics and a layout inspired by the bigger 6. Launch engines will come from the Ford stable, with petrol units ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 litres and diesels from 1.6 to 2.2 litres.
As engineers made the latest 2 lighter than its predecessor, the new 3 is set to weigh less, too. Add in the liberal use of biodegradable materials, and it will be one of the greenest hatchbacks around.
Performance fans will be pleased to hear that an MPS model will feature the five-cylinder turbo from the Focus ST. In the Mazda, which is due in 2010, this will offer around 250bhp. And the discreet look of the current 3 MPS is set to be axed in favour of a more menacing design.
As our picture shows, even entry-level versions of the new car will look good, though. Teardrop headlamps curve down into a deep front grille and are flanked by wide wheelarches. A sharp crease runs through each door handle, and kinks above the side sills add drama.

Wow I am definitely impressed! Can't wait to see the hatch version. Time to start saving :) I hope Mazda North America doesn't change the next-gen 3 from the World version like they did w/ the 6.

hmmmm. i wonder if the Volvo T5 engine is going to be the MPS' powerplant, will the R-engine fit? :)

they stole acuras front end of their new cars. but otherwise a great improvement on a car that was due for a shake up, im impressed none the less, cant wait to see it at the dealerships!

Thats not mazda3, that loos alot like what 09 mazda6 looks like. If you go to spy pictures it doesnt look nothing like that.

+1 on that. I've played with some cars in PS before but nothing that extreme. I know a couple people who are just amazing in PS.

Jeff I don't know how good it looked on the car you saw, but on the rendering and camo'd mule I don't mind it. However I'd probably end up painting the chrome bit, but overall I like the look with the car.

So WAIT.. they want to now give us the new Speed3, but slower?! LOL wtf are they thinking? That I-5 turbo only makes 220hp.. why would they do that? And the Focus ST is by no measure as fast.
No way in hell a company will go backwards, lol. Fast one first, then the slow one after. No wonder sequels always suck; this seems to be one of them.. Hopefully they change their mind(s) and give us something similar to what we have/ more powerful..

I think that toy is hideous.. but I *love* the pic in 3GFX's post.
I won't get excited though until the official unveil. Until then everything's just speculation.

I think the toy is pretty ugly as well. Its features are too exaggerated because it's a toy, maybe that's why it looks weird.

Well it kinda looks like the current Lancer.
This mule car needs to be slammed...it looks higher off the ground than the Mazda5

it's more expensive but if the mileage is anything like VW's 1000km/tank makes it welllll worth it

Yes, but you can go MUCH further on a tank (probably close to 2x the distance...) Also, I don't know if this is true or not, but apparently diesel CAN be better for the environment than gas.

Well Diesel is almost on par with Gas now, but like the guys said, you get a lot better milage. You also have the option to use bio-diesel (though I don't know who sells and how much yet)
There is also the great amount of low-end torque you get which is great in traffic.
The only dissadvantage is the higher maintenance cost over gas engines.
But unfortunately it doesn't look like NA will be getting a Diesel Mazda any time soon.
