So I noticed in the distance that there is a fire at 401 and Wilson. I can see and hear it from the roof top of my work downtown... crazy stuff!

Hope no one was hurt. Interested in seeing what it was though, so if anyone knows chime in...

Someone linked that on another forum I frequent. It's from Live Journal or something.

Flickr seems to have a lot of photos already:

man, I was watching the olympics at close to 4 am when I heard a huge huge explosion and my door shook (in an apt building!!) at yonge and sheppard.. I looked out the window cuz I thought it was thunder.. but there was no rain.. so I thought nothing of it and went to bed.. crazy man..

edit: on CP24 I read that there were suppose to be workers in the facility which cannot be found.

Not the best way to describe the tragedy eh?

Damn, lucky that wasn't in my neighbourhood. It would be shitty if it was around the corner from me and I had to evacuate in the middle of the night.

That fireball looks spectacular! and the shockwave afterwards. :0

I was awake till a bit past 4am after a night on the town & I also heard a bang off in the distance because my windows vibrated a bit. I assumed it was thunder b/c of all the rain we've been having. It's incredible to learn that it was an explosion.

we're in the high park area and woke up to the loudest bang i've ever heard. tried to convince myself it was thunder... my hubby said no way that's thunder. then about a min later saw the entire sky light up as if it was daylight... went outside and and just saw a ball of fire and so much black smoke far far north.
I've never been so scared in my life. I put on the radio and we just listened to callers. The glowing fire ball burned for a good hour after the huge boom, before it dissipated enough we couldnt' see it so far south.

it's still totally surreal to me, i watch the videos and it's as if i'm watching a movie.

my heart goes out to all the people affected by this tragedy, but it's amazing more people weren't hurt.

Just found out about this before heading home from my parents for the weekend. Mom said "You may want to take the 407, the 401 is closed because a gas tanker accident" only to get home and find this out!

Insane, hopefully not to many people are hurt. I read that 1 firefighter died form it.

That's scary. I didn't know that. We deal with 100lb tanks at work during winter for heaters on our construction sites. We hook up three 100lb propane tanks to each heater, have 100-150 tanks of propane on site at any given time, all 100lb.

I live couple kilometers north of yonge and steeles, and I heard the first shockwave between 3 to 4 a.m. it shook my house!
I was playing an online game at that moment and didnt bother looking out.. The bangs continued for hours until I fell asleep.. Sounded exactly like war zone footage you see on TV.
I thought it was thundering.. Should have looked out though.

I was at work, which is at Wilson & the Allen, about 1,5 km east of the incident...witnessed the whole thing :whoa

First explosion (approx 3:50am) rocked the whole complex and sounded like thunder, I and a few fellow workers went out and up the crest of a hill on the south side of the complex for a better view and I was filming it with my cell when the second and the largest explosion occurred, friggen shock wave made us stumble and drop my phone and the heat was intense! We ended up watching it for the next hour. There was hundreds of smaller explosions and once in a while you'd see what was probably propane tanks shooting into the air~it was like a damned battle zone!! ...We all we're waiting to get some kind of evac orders as the smoke was being blown directly above our complex but it never came, instead we we're asked to grab some buses and take them to the area for the evacuation of people.....it was quite the experience to say the least!!

Very sad to hear about the Firefighter who passed away in the line of duty.

Agreed. It is always unfortunate when an emergency services worker passes in the line of duty. My condolences for his family and friends as well.

I am still puzzled at how the propane company was situated that close to residential housing. I hope no one here is or has been affected from this event.

Toronto's emergency services have done a great job evacuating and keeping everyone safe.

That explosion was just insane!! I just saw the footage from the youtube link just nuts! My girl was just telling me how someone on Breakfast TV predicted it 2 weeks ago and how this morning Kevin (news guy) was getting called in multiple times this morning about it. I really don't believe with people predicting the future so he may know something about that explosion...strange stuff i tell you..

That area was zoned prior to amalgamation of the GTA.

The company was already there before housing development even started.

I think it is absolutely retarded to sue the city. The money is going to come from all the tax payers' pockets. The city didn't force them to buy homes so close to the propane facility, they should have done more research first if they didn't want it in their area.

just heard on the news that they had infractions in 2006 and the same infractions again in 2007 and city/law didn't do anything about it (there is a huge investigation now)
