I am thinking of bringing my own synthetic oil when I take my car to get it's oil change. How much oil do I need to bring to the dealer and what grade of syn? Thanks in advance. BTW, I have a 2007 M3 GT.

Is there a specific bottle you guys recommend? My first oil change is just around the corner. How much savings am I looking at if I bring my own oil to the dealer? And where can I buy them from? (CT, Walmart.. I'm assuming?)
Thanks.

You won't save much by bringing your own oil to the dealership. I have my invoices somewhere, but I think they only knocked off like 10 or 15 bones at the most.
If you go to your own mechanic then your just looking at labour. I think you'd see more savings by bringing your own oil/filter to your own mechanic as opposed to the dealership.

Say if I bring my own oil to Midas for an Oil Change, Mazda will honour the warranty if I keep all the service records right?

My understanding is yes, you would have a foot to stand on if you ever needed warranty work by keeping the service record, as long as the mechanic is licensed. Try a quick search to see if anyone's here has ever had an issue; I recall reading a post that you should be ok.
That being said, I've had my cars worked on by independant licensed mechanics, and have never had issues with warranty. But I should say that I've never had an engine blow or anything serious like that, so I haven't had to fight for my warranty with a dealership.
Something to be aware of is that our oil filter cartridge is plastic. If you don't trust your mechanic to torque the cartridge properly I would think twice about having the work done there.
Btw, depending on the oil you want to use, yes cdn tire; walmart; etc. If you want Amsoil or Royal Purple, contact a forum sponsor or try Speedtech on Bullock. I used to run Mobil1, now I run RP.

Right on the engine it says 5w20 to put in it...
5W20 is thinner and is better suited for winter temperatures
5W30 is heavier-thicker than 5W20 and I think gives better protection in hotter weather...
The reason for 5W20 is for fuel economy, probably wouldn't see much MPG differences between either one...JMO

why does the manufacture recommend 5W20?
Because they test,re-test,run the hell out of an engine, then start all over with different oil types.
And they've determined 5w20 to be the best. Don't undermind the Japs, they > us.

That's true, but in actuality they(Mazda) have specified 5w-20 for better fuel economy as it has adequate protection for our engines tolerances. In hotter temps you would want to use 5w-30 for better protection but fuel consumption might increase....the answer is to use a full synthetic of either grade for best wear protection.
