Vehicle Registration Tax Kicks In For T.O. Drivers On Monday
Wednesday August 27, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff

Do you know what Monday is?

Oh sure, it's the first of September, it's Labour Day and it's the last long holiday weekend of the summer before work, school and maybe an election all intrude.

But there's no holiday from the tax man and if you live in Toronto, he's about to grab an extra $60 from your wallet. The beginning of the new month means Toronto's much hated Vehicle Registration Tax is about to kick in for good.

In you live in the city, the next time you go to get your sticker renewed for another year, it will cost you the extra levy. It will set you back $60 for a car and $30 for a motorcycle or moped.

The charge was part of the changes pushed through by Mayor David Miller last year, as the cash strapped city went looking for extra money.

While the car licence cost is a bit of a pain for most drivers, it's nothing compared to the other heavy levy city councillors pushed through. The Land Transfer Tax is already in place, and siphons thousands of dollars off the sale of a new home in the city, leaving many looking elsewhere in the GTA for a place to live.

The new taxes are expected to bring in some $200 million, but that still may not be enough to satisfy the always cash hungry city, which has to contend with higher costs for infrastructure repair, police and other union salaries, downloading, and increased expenses for the TTC.

First time home buyers, this also affects you (a new land transfer tax was part of the City of Toronto agreement with the province).

This is only strictly for "Toronto" right? I live in Brampton so would I get taxed as well?

oh...I thought this kicked in already.

I just got my plate sticker renewal in the mail (birthday in Nov). I better go renew it today for two years (usually only renew for one).

Thanks for the heads-up.

my sticker costs 70$ per year, does that mean it will cost 130 next time?

in the states, the yearly stickers cost 30$...

Yep...we are going to be screwed for our next renewal...

So much for saving money on emissions testing. Instead it goes towards another vacation for the politicians...:bang

People buying new vehicles or transferring vehicles will not be affected.

Although this tax is, currently, only for residents whose postal code begins with "M", the City of Toronto has set a precident. What is to stop other municipalities from signing a similar agreement with the province?

Anyone can renew their sticker up to 6 months ahead of time. As long as you renew before September 1, 2008, you will not be "dinged" for the $60/$120 this time around.

be glad they don't follow Singapore's lead on car registration and road tax... Otherwise, cars might end up costing a buttload:

(and for those wondering, 1 sing $ = 75c canadian.. )

Does this mean that people who have thier driver's license stated as "Toronto, Ontario" are the only ones that have to pay this tax? What if you're in "Thornhill, Ontario" or "Markham, Ontario"?

They will charge you the unpaid $120 when you renew after 2 years. :chuckle

So you're saying that even though I was able to dodged the new fee by renewing for my November sticker before the new tax went into effect that they will still charge me for it in 2 years when I renew again? So in 2 years I will have to pay tax on that renewal as well has my current renewal??

Hmmm...can anyone confirm this?

Correct. I heard this on the news. Even if you missed it for this year or next by renewing early, you'll get charged the next time you go to renew. :bang

that's totally messed up. I renewed for 2 years last year in hopes that I wouldn't have to pay this BS tax.. now I'm going to get dinged next year..

bluntman

That $120 for the two years you thought you could miss (2008 and 2009) PLUS the $60 or the $120 for the next year or two (2010 or 2011)!

Why do I doubt that you will get anything back if you pay for two years and then move out of Toronto in less than one year....
