people still dont seem to grasp the 50 over law, as OPP report 113 cars towed for doing 50km/h over. average age of people pulled over was 21, and majority was males. there was also 4 deaths that were car related this long weekend which is significantly down from last year of 11 deaths.

There was also a report of a plane radar catching a bike doing over 211 as well - dumb@ss

i was taking the highway home from hamilton yesterday, and there was a OPP suv on the overpass doing radar... and a cruiser just down the highway a bit.
thank god i was doing 100 cuz all my windows were down, and my exhaust gets loud between 105 and 125

113 x 10 000$ = 1 130 000$ + all the court fees and towing business, insurance, etc.

Pretty good budget for next year I think! They must be proud!

lol how are they not guilty? Sorry officer I didn't see you? If you get caught 50 over excuses are pretty much useless...

man speeding is so useless now, espeically with the amount of fuel you save.

if you want to go 130ish legaly, go to the US!

Alot of people are actually getting out of paying the huge fine. Most people are not getting tha max $10,000 fine but still it's a good $$ grab.

suspending your license should be enough as your insurance would go rocket high.

i hope it's back to normal again. Paying overtime for all those cops aint cheap :chuckle

you will seldom hear of people getting the max fine unless their speed results in something else occuring or if theirs ACTUAL street racing going on...the number is a deterrant i think

Is there no traffic on the highway, or is the average speed of the traffic that high?:chuckle

I think the fine collected should go to putting more cops on the street

And line their pockets?

If you can afford to speed then speed, but don't complain when you get caught.

If you can't then don't speed.

Driving back into the city on the 400 yesterday the average speed in the center lane was around 115-120km/h...Every time we came up on an OPP cruiser or SUV the guys in the left lane doing 150+ would jam on the brakes and get into the center or even the right lane. Really dangerous. I don't get the point of going 140+ through Barrie when you're riding the bumper of the guy in front...

I'll admit. I used to be one of those going faster. Most of the times, it was on an empty road. But even before the new law, I toned down my driving. Just not worth it. Most of the time, 120km/h is my max. And even then, sometimes I want to slow down just in case. I don't know why people are in such a hurry and go that fast in and out of traffic.

I agree Iceman...I also have to admit, I picked up my new Mazda3 Sport on friday and drove up to the cottage that night. Man was it easy to get to 140kmh without even realizing it, such a smooth, quiet ride.

Ditto.

Honestly, I don't see why people need to go that fast in the city. Getting to places 5 minutes faster isn't worth risking the safety of others and yourself.

What are you going to do? There are always going to be insecure people trying to prove their worth on the roads.

On the side note, somethings gotta be done about tailgating on highway.
Every time I get on highway, I always see someone few meters behind my bumper doing over speed limit, and worse yet, I see over ten cars driving couple meters behind each other doing 130+.
Just looking at it gives me chills, it is just a ticking time bomb that can go off any time.
No wonder there are so many accidents involving twenty, thirty cars on highways.

Plus, I rarely see people following two second rule. It's almost come to the point that drivers think you are dumb when you leave two second gap in front of you; they tailgate you to push you out of the way (even though you are keeping constant distance from the car in front of you, which means that you are going with the flow, not slower or faster).
Or they undertake you to end up tailgating the car in front of you.

I just find all these really silly and dangerous. Frustrating, even..

one question, what proof do you have that people are getting out of paying the max fine of $10,000 but you are probably right as its like not getting the max sentence for doing a crime and its not a $$ grab as its in place to protect you and me and us from idiots.

lol i was wondering that as well, i dont know any idiot friends who do 50 over, or know anyone who has been pulled over for this 50 over. Are you guessing that they dont pay the max fine by just word of mouth? Although i do doubt anyone has ever paid the 10,000, just curious to how you guys "know" that as a matter of fact.

With the amount of traffic on the highways sometimes, I don't think the 2-second rule is physically possible :P

Well going 100km/hr = 100000m/h = 27.8m/s, then you would need 56m separating each car. Based on how many cars on are the highway and the size of the highway, it is probably physically impossible..:/

I heard or read it in the news. They had statistics with it too.

Most of the time, yeah it is. Since any room you leave is gone a short while later by people weaving in and out of traffic. Then you have to slow down to create that space again and someone else makes use of it. However if you drive really late at night or on the 407, there's a bit more leeway, but still can be pretty bad.

he didn't cause an accident.....that's why

like i said you will be hard pressed to find anyone that has actually been given the full extent of this new law

but in the old days going that fast would have been an automatic court summons since i know at least 3 people that have been caught that fast back in high school.....1 got off and the other 2 jsut recently can drive again with *decent* insurance premiums

I guess I'm a grumpy old man nowadays but 180 in a 50 zone is just so incredibly stupid I'm hoping your buddy doesn't get his license back anytime soon.

And if I may, 180 in a neon isn't safe whether you're on the road or a track with nobody else, further proving your buddy's complete disconnection with the really real world.

See...this is the basic problem with the 50 over law. You have nothing after 50 over. Now, 100 in a 50 is dangerous and stupid, but 80 over that is just ****ing RETARDED.

Guy should have to start back at G1. 5 years from now that is. Till then no driving for him.

^^^ 100% agree.

I still think it should be percentage over the limit... 80 in a 40 zone and 200 in a 100 zone should have the same consequences.

condor888000
09-03-2008, 01:40 PM
Agreed. Only problem I see is that 60 in 40 would be treated the same as 150 in a 100. While occasionally it deserves a severe punishment(school zones for example), there are some streets that should not be a 40 and are. Other than that, I have no issues with a percentage based system.

I know, I was saying that 50 over is stupidly bad, but 80 overtop of that(130 over) is ****ing retarded.

$5000/each still brings a lot of money to the government and their contracting partners, tow trucks, compound etc. The gov probably do a get a cut of that too?
