Hey guys,

I got an auto 2005 Mazda 3 Sport and lately it has been shifting HARD from 2nd to 3rd.

It happens when I let off the gas early (not sure how many RPMs, havent looked yet) shortly after it has been in 2nd before going into 3rd.

If I let off the gas later in 2nd, it shifts fine. I have to get the exact number of RPMs so I can explain myself better, but based on what i described, does anyone know what I am talking about and if this can be fixed???

Thanks

I see that you're still new here, but word of advice before the flaming begins, use the search function before beginning a new thread as this is a topic that has been talked about numerous times. Here's your noob freebie answer...its common with the 3 especially off a cold start, you'll notice it more when winter rolls around. Take it into the dealership and explain to them a reflash might help the issue. Enjoy your stay on the board and use the search, there's a lot of good info here!

thanks for your comments.

as for the search button: im new to the forum, but not forums in general...the website seemed to be extremely slow today (even now) and i decided i'd throw up a post since i was taking me like 60 minutes just to pull up the search results...

but yea, next time ill do a search if it lets me ;)

My auto integra used to do that, I changed the tranny fluid and it helped a little.

have you ever had a tranny fluid flush?

nope, never had it done...is that covered under warranty? if not, how much does it usually cost?

my only concern is that the car never did it before, it jus recently started to do it.

at the dealer the first step is usually reflashing your ECU (i think its the ECU) and they let you off.

I've done that step.. and 1 1/2 months later its back. I'm gonna have to take it back

Automatic Hondas(Acuras) are NOTORIOUS for that...my civic was the same way....really annoying

How do you know he will get flamed?
The hard shift you are talking about is from first to second which is a common issue for the Automatic at a cold start off. . So most threads are about that issue. 2nd to 3rd is different issue and new to me and deserves a new thread.
Don't call members NOOBS its degrading and rude...

You're a little sensitive, sauga_kid wasn't being rude. Even Cash didn't show signs of negative emotion.

I have the transmission flush at Scarboro Mazda done at 60,000 km. It charged $180 + taxes.

My car had shift shock only from 1st to 2nd. After it was reflashed two years ago, it never happened. But I don't know whether it's common for 2nd to 3rd gear.

If your car still under warranty, the reflash should be covered. When I had it done, there was no CEL. But once I mentioned shift shock, they found the service bulletin and did it for free. But as I said before, it's for 1st gear to 2nd gear shock. I don't know if yours is the same and can be fixed by reflashed.

shift confusion doesnt sound like something you wanna ignore, or that is fine.

the term "shift confusion" doesnt sound like a good thing, but the service manager said that if i was to release the peddle within the first 10% of the gear (or last 10%? cant remember) it creates shift confusion and kicks hard to the next gear. he said it was normal.

im not sure if my car knows im talking about it on the forum, but i cannot seem to duplicate the problem from shifting into 3rd from 2nd. Now, the issue is with 1st to 2nd....weird!!!

Going from a domestic car to an import, i noticed something...my domestic cars have been fairly consistant in their "problems" and never really fixed themselves...my mazda and brother's infinity, will show signs of some future problems but magically fix themselves without having to take it to a mechanic..lol whether it be random ticking noises, poor shifting, radio issue, etc...

I don't want to recommend that dealer to you because they are crook. But the following is the link for the shift shock bulletin.
http://www.finishlineperformance.com/pdf/mazda3/bulletin/05-010-05-1543.pdf

According to Warranty Information on page 3, if your car is eligible, it should be covered.

If your dealer refuses to do it for you, search this forum about other good dealers near you and go there.

wow, thanks man! any suggestions on how to pursue this under warranty? should i print it out and show a dealer if they refuse to acknowledge it as a problem or give me some lame excuse like it being "shift confusion"?
