I just got my transponder for the 407 and the instructions tell me that I have to mount it to the windshield just behind the rearview mirror...not crazy about it but if I have to I will.
Can't I just place it on the dash before I enter the toll or do I have to mount it as instructed?
I was wondering if anyone else has the transponder and where they have placed it on their vehicle.
Thx

place it on the dash both before entering and just as you're about to leave.
you don't have to mount it as instructed. it will even pick up the signal in your armrest, majority of the time but not consistent enough to leave it there.
one guy pulled the centre vent piece and placed the transponder in there but that limits portability if you want to use it in another car.

Thanks for the info...
I read that it has lights on the side, so therefore do the lights blink or is there a beep when I enter and leave the toll?

Ours only beeps when you EXIT, kinda annoying. MOST of the time works in the center dash console - but best if in view (I always forget to hold it up, but only once it was too low and didn't catch getting on, only off - they fixed it for me.

its's the dumbest thing really, it doesn't beep when you enter, but beeps 3 times if it registered a successful exit (and show a green light).
if it doesn't register, it does nothing (no lights and no beeps). the red and yellow lights rarely light.
if the transponder doesn't register, it may appear on your bill as the proper exit but, because it didn't register the entry, you're charge for 1 exit. as long as you drive in the car with the license plate that the transponder is registered to, you won't be charged the non-transponder fee if the transponder doesn't beep.
be prepared to buy new tires sooner (depending how much you use the 407)...the concrete compound is harsher on tires than normal asphalt :)

I mounted mine in the empty space inside the centre vent area. Still works every time.

On my previous 3 I stuck the 2 velcro strips to the left of the rear view mirror cover. Just pulled the adhesive off when I traded the car in.

I've mounted mine along with another tiny gps receiver on the left and right of the rearview mirror, with the supplied velcro...it's sticking to the black dots...will I have problems peeling it off? I don't have to peel anything off at the moment, but just wondering for down the road.

The glue gets into the holes... you can use goo-gone to remove it from the surface of the black dots, but getting the glue out of the holes where it is directly on the glass is a real b*tch.

Mine is to the left of my rear view mirror as well (as recommended). My car is a lease though, so it'll be going back with the two velcro strips still stuck to the glass. I'll let mazda worry about removing them and any residual glue.

Same here. I like it there, it covers the open spot were the sun seems to peek through between the visor and mirror. Man I wish our visors had extenders!!!
